Antiviral Properties of ISG15 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The type I interferon system plays a critical role in limiting the spread of viral infection. Viruses induce the production of interferon (IFN), which after binding to the IFN-α/β receptor (IFNAR), and triggering of the JAK/STAT signaling cascade ...

Co‐expression of HSV‐1 ICP34.5 enhances the expression of gene delivered by self‐amplifying RNA and mitigates its immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 7, Page 1079-1089, July 2025.
ICP34.5 is one of the most important antihost response proteins. The saRNA‐encoding HSV‐1 neurovirulence protein ICP34.5 clearly mediated the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha subunit (eIF2α) dephosphorylation and significant suppression of innate immune responses in vitro, leading to enhanced expression of the saRNA‐encoded gene.

Establishment of a New Real-Time Molecular Assay for the Detection of Babanki Virus in Africa

open access: yesViruses
Babanki virus is a subtype of the Sindbis virus, a widespread arthropod-borne alphavirus circulating in Eurasia, Africa, and Oceania. Characterized by rashes and arthritis, clinical infections due to Sindbis were mainly reported in Africa, Australia ...

Mosquitoborne Sindbis Virus Infection and Long-Term Illness

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
An unexpected human outbreak of the mosquitoborne Sindbis virus occurred in a previously nonendemic area of Sweden. At follow-up, 6–8 months after infection, 39% of patients had chronic arthralgia that affected their daily activities.

Abundance, Diversity and Phenology of Mosquito Larvae in a Highly Anthropized Wetland: Health and Management Implications of Gándaras de Budiño (NW Spain)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
The natural and anthropized wetland of Gándaras de Budiño (Galicia, Spain) hosts a great number of mosquito species. Culex pipiens s.l. and Culex torrentium pose an emerging risk for West Nile virus transmission. The temporary and polluted waters, as well as the summer and spring seasons, favor the larval proliferation of these vectors.

Multiplexing FSCV and iGluSnFR3 Sensors Reveals Adenosine Transiently Inhibits Stimulated Dopamine and Glutamate Release

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 7, July 2025.
This study highlights the innovative application of multiplexing fast‐scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) and genetically encoded fluorescence sensors to simultaneously monitor interactions among adenosine, dopamine, and glutamate with high temporal and spatial resolution.

Detection of seroconversion to West Nile virus, Usutu virus and Sindbis virus in UK sentinel chickens

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2006
Summary We previously reported evidence of West Nile virus (WNV) circulation in UK birds, probably introduced by migratory birds from overseas. We now demonstrate WNV-specific seroconversion in sentinel chickens raised on an English farm.

Mannose binding lectin is required for alphavirus-induced arthritis/myositis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Mosquito-borne alphaviruses such as chikungunya virus and Ross River virus (RRV) are emerging pathogens capable of causing large-scale epidemics of virus-induced arthritis and myositis.

First Phosphonic‐Type Inhibitors and Activity‐Based Probes Specific to the O'nyong‐nyong Virus Capsid Protease

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 20, Issue 12, June 17, 2025.
The serine capsid protease (CP) catalyzes a crucial process of the alphaviral replication cycle; therefore, it constitutes an interesting therapy target. Herein, the O'nyong‐nyong virus CP profile activity with a specific fluorogenic substrate is analyzed and examines the inhibitory activity of a new series of phosphonic analogs of tryptophan and ...

The alphaviruses: gene expression, replication, and evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
The alphaviruses are a genus of 26 enveloped viruses that cause disease in humans and domestic animals. Mosquitoes or other hematophagous arthropods serve as vectors for these viruses.
