In vivo evidence for glycyl radical insertion into a catalytically inactive variant of pyruvate formate‐lyase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Dimeric pyruvate formate‐lyase cleaves pyruvate using a radical‐based mechanism. G734 serves as a radical storage location, and the radical is transferred to the catalytic C419 residue. Mutation of the C418‐C419 pair causes loss of enzyme activity, but does not impede radical introduction onto G734. Therefore, cis‐ but not trans‐radical transfer occurs

Evolutionary interplay between viruses and R‐loops

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses interact with specialized nucleic acid structures called R‐loops to influence host transcription, epigenetic states, latency, and immune evasion. This Perspective examines the roles of R‐loops in viral replication, integration, and silencing, and how viruses co‐opt or avoid these structures.

Disruption of SETD3‐mediated histidine‐73 methylation by the BWCFF‐associated β‐actin G74S mutation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The β‐actin G74S mutation causes altered interaction of actin with SETD3, reducing histidine‐73 methylation efficiency and forming two distinct actin variants. The variable ratio of these variants across cell types and developmental stages contributes to tissue‐specific phenotypical changes. This imbalance may impair actin dynamics and mechanosensitive

Ethane/ethylene separation in a metal-organic framework with iron-peroxo sites

open access: yesScience, 2018
A preference for ethane Industrial production of ethylene requires its separation from ethane in a cryogenic process that consumes large amounts of energy. An alternative would be differential sorption in microporous materials.

Pre-Crop Chemical Control Has No Effects on Corn Leaf Aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Endosymbiotic Bacterial Diversity Along an Industrial Maize Management

open access: yesInsects
During this research, the corn leaf aphids endosymbiotic bacterial diversity was tested in the same crop systems (monoculture industrial maize as grain for livestock) and the same soil type (Chernozem) when pre-crop pesticide management was used ...

Purification tags markedly affect self‐aggregation of CPEB3

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Although recombinant proteins are used to study protein aggregation in vitro, uncleaved tags can interfere with accurate interpretation. Our findings demonstrate that His₆‐GFP and His₁₂ tags significantly affect liquid droplet and amyloid fibril formation in the intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of mouse cytoplasmic polyadenylation element‐binding ...
