β-Sitosterol Reverses Multidrug Resistance via BCRP Suppression by Inhibiting the p53-MDM2 Interaction in Colorectal Cancer.

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2020
Phytosterols are widely present in vegetable oils, nuts, cereal products, fruits, and berries. Phytosterol-induced treatment sensitivity has recently shed light on alleviating multidrug resistance in cancer therapy.

A function of sitosterol

Phytochemistry, 1969
Abstract Sitosterol-3- 14 C was converted by a Digitalis lanata plant to progesterone, digitoxigenin, gitoxigenin, and digoxigenin. The results indicate that sitosterol functions as a starting material for the biosynthesis of other steroids in plants.

?-Sitosterol from montan wax

Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences, USSR Division of Chemical Science, 1963
1. By the method of selective dissolution with subsequent chromatographic separation,β-sitosterol was isolated from peat montan wax and its acetate and benzoate were prepared. 2. The identity of these with known samples was proved by comparison of chromatograms, melting points (mixture tests), and infrared spectra.

Quantitation of β‐Sitosterol in Bourbon

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1991
Four phytoestrogens have previously been isolated and identified in alcoholic beverages. Before studies to evaluate the degree of estrogenicity of these substances can be performed, it is necessary to determine appropriate doses to be administered to experimental animals.

Absorbability of β-sitosterol in humans

Metabolism, 1969
Abstract Tritium labeled β-sitosterol was administered orally to 5 normal humans and to 5 terminal patients. Isolation of tritium-labeled sterols from plasma and red blood cells of normal male subjects showed some absorption had occurred, but it was much less than for comparable doses of labeled cholesterol.

Rat toxicity studies with β-sitosterol

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 1990
Chronic administration of beta-sitosterol subcutaneously to rats for 60 days was well tolerated and there was no clear cut evidence of any gross or microscopic lesions either in the liver or kidney. Liver and kidney function tests were assessed by determining the blood/serum parameters like haemoglobin, blood glucose, serum protein, serum bilirubin ...

Sitosterol in juvenile type II hyperlipoproteinemia

Atherosclerosis, 1978
The effect of beta-sitosterol on plasma lipids and lipoproteins was evaluated in a randomized double-blind cross-over trial in 15 children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolemia over a period of 6 months. Twelve patients completed the study, with good adherence to drug intake.

Fate of Beta-Sitosterol in Housefly Larvæ

Nature, 1958
TWENTY different species of insect larvae, distributed among four orders (Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera) have been found so far to require sterols as growth factors. All of them, excepting the Dermestidae (Dermestes vulpinus Fabr.1 and Attagenus piceus Oliv.2), can utilize both zoosterols and phytosterols; certain species, however ...

Sitosterol in Type II Hyperlipoproteinemia

1976
In 1951, PETERSON reported that the increase of plasma cholesterol levels in chickens caused by cholesterol feeding can be prevented by including 1 % soybean sterols in the diet (18). Since then, numerous investigators have demonstrated a hypocholesterolemic action of plant sterols, especially beta-sitosterol, in experimental animals and man (2, 3, 7 ...
