Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp.) H. Rob., (family Asteraceae) commonly known as “yacon” or “yakon”, is an herbaceous perennial species native to South America. Its tuberous roots have a sweet taste and are used as traditional food and eaten either raw alone or in fruit salads. They can be also boiled, baked or used to prepare beverages, syrup or juice.

In vitro chromosome doubling was induced in octoploid (2n = 58) yacon using oryzalin and colchicine as mitotic spindle inhibitors. Nodal segments of in vitro cultured plants, 5–15 mm long, were exposed to 20, 25, or 30 μM oryzalin and 1, 3, or 5 mM colchicine for 24 or 48 h.
