Calcium Signaling in Smooth Muscle [PDF]
Changes in intracellular Ca(2+) are central to the function of smooth muscle, which lines the walls of all hollow organs. These changes take a variety of forms, from sustained, cell-wide increases to temporally varying, localized changes. The nature of the Ca(2+) signal is a reflection of the source of Ca(2+) (extracellular or intracellular) and the ...

Loss of primary cilia in endothelial cells promotes EndMT and vascular abnormalities in the ovarian tumor microenvironment through EphA2 activation. Using human samples, in vitro models, and endothelial‐specific Kif3a‐knockout mice, we show that primary cilia loss drives the acquisition of cancer‐associated fibroblast‐like phenotypes, thereby ...

The Anatomic Features of Müller’s Muscle: A Histology Study in Chinese
Background:. The purpose of this article is to clarify the character of Müller’s muscle in Chinese specimens. Methods:. Ten upper eyelids of 10 formalin-fixed Chinese cadavers (9 elderly people, from 68 to 86 years of age; 1 male child, 10 years old ...

Genomics‐led approach to drug testing in models of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma
GA text Genomic data from undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma patients and preclinical models were used to inform a targeted drug screen. Selected compounds were tested in 2D and 3D cultures of UPS cell lines. A combination of trametinib and infigratinib was synergistic in the majority of UPS cell lines tested, which was further confirmed in an ex ...

α-Smooth Muscle Actin and ACTA2 Gene Expressions in Vasculopathies
α-smooth muscle actin, encoded by ACTA2 gene, is an isoform of the vascular smooth muscle actins, typically expressed in the vascular smooth muscle cells contributing to vascular motility and contraction. ACTA2 gene mutations cause a diversity of diffuse

Smooth muscle cells contribute to cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. The capacity of these cells to undergo phenotypic switching in mature arteries of the systemic circulation underlies their pathogenic role in atherosclerosis ...

Vanadate is a trace element in biological tissues which has inhibitory actions on various enzymes. It inhibits Na, K-ATPase of smooth muscle membrane. Ca-ATPase and Ca-uptake of membranous systems of smooth muscle cells are also inhibited by vanadate. Vanadate induces contractions in various smooth muscles.

Electrophysiology of Syncytial Smooth Muscle [PDF]
As in other excitable tissues, two classes of electrical signals are of fundamental importance to the functioning of smooth muscles: junction potentials, which arise from neurotransmission and represent the initiation of excitation (or in some instances inhibition) of the tissue, and spikes or action potentials, which represent the accomplishment of ...

Overexpression of CHRDL2 in colon cancer cells makes them more stem‐like and resistant to chemo‐ and radiotherapy. CHRDL2‐high cells have upregulation of the WNT pathway, genes involved in the DNA damage response (DDR) pathway and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT). This leads to quicker repair of damaged DNA and more cell migration.

Smooth muscle cells largely develop independently of functional hemogenic endothelium
Vascular smooth muscle cells represent a major component of the cardiovascular system. In vitro studies have shown that FLK1+ cells derived from embryonic stem (ES) cells can differentiate into both endothelial and smooth muscle cells.
