Planes on a Snake? On the Identities of Crab Larvae Rafting on Sea Snakes
Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.We sequenced COI and 16S rRNA genes from 106 crab megalopae found rafting on the pelagic sea snake Hydrophis platurus to test whether they were the obligate rafting species Planes minutus. Instead, all larvae belonged to three inter‐ to supratidal grapsid crabs—Pachygrapsus socius, Goniopsis pulchra, and Grapsus grapsus—revealing no evidence of Planes.
