NEW SYMPTOMS OF TOMATO SOFT ROT DISEASES IN TURKEY

In the winter and early spring of 2002, soft rotted tomato plants and fruits were observed in several commercial plastic-covered greenhouses in Mersin and Antakya, located in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. The disease incidence was approximately 20-25% and 80-90% in greenhouses of Mersin and Antakya, respectively.

Role of phenolic substances in pathogenesis of soft rot diseases

AbstractPhomopsis sapotae and P. psidii are known to cause severe fruit rot diseases of Achras sapota and Psidium quajava fruits respectively. Among all tested phenolic compounds, α‐naphthol (50 ppm) and guaiacol (250 ppm) caused complete inhibition of mycelial growth of Phomopsis sapotae and P. psidii.

Bacterial soft rot of potato is mainly caused by the soft rotting erwinias, but pectolytic strains of Clostridium, Bacillus, Flavobacterium and fluorescent pseudomonads may also be involved. In advanced decays mixtures of the above bacteria may be present and complicate diagnostic procedures.
