Demonstration of specific plasma protein binding sites for somatomedin.

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1977
Native somatomedin (SM) has an apparent mol wt of at least 60,000 daltons, while all the purified SM peptides have mol wt 5-8,000 daltsons. We have studied the behavior of somatomedin in plasma during gel filtration at pH 8.1 and pH 2.8, and by the ...

Nutrition and somatomedin. XIII. Usefulness of somatomedin-C in nutritional assessment

The American Journal of Medicine, 1985
Malnutrition is common in hospitalized patients, but current measures of nutritional status are limited. Because levels of somatomedins are regulated by nutrition, the utility of somatomedin-C measurement in nutritional assessment was studied. Thirty-seven malnourished patients had measurement of somatomedin-C and conventional nutritional indexes.

Sequence analysis of somatomedin-C: confirmation of identity with insulin-like growth factor I.

Endocrinology, 1983
Somatomedin-C (Sm-C) was purified from Cohn fraction IV of human plasma by previously published methods. Purity was established by SDS polyacrylamide electrophoresis followed by silver staining of the gel.

Characterization of the insulin and somatomedin-C receptors in human placental cell membranes.

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1974
Human placentas have been used to further investigate the binding of insulin and somatomedin to cell membrane receptors. Conditions for optimal binding of 125I-insulin were defined for both participate membrane preparations and membranes solubilized in ...

Nutrition and somatomedin. XIV. Altered levels of somatomedins and somatomedin inhibitors in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes

Metabolism, 1985
Diabetes is associated with poor growth despite elevated levels of growth hormone (GH). Skeletal GH effects are mediated by somatomedins; in diabetes, somatomedins measured by radioassay are normal, yet somatomedin activity measured by bioassay is low. Since bioassay measurements reflect the presence of both somatomedins and somatomedin inhibitors, we ...

Further Comparisons of the [125I]Somatomedin A and the [125I]Somatomedin C Radioreceptor Assays of Somatomedin Peptide*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1979
The GH dependency of somatomedin (SM) peptide content in plasma was assessed using the placental membrane radioreceptor assay (RRA) to measure whole and acid-chromatographed plasma using both [125I]SM A and [125I]SM C. Plasmas from 10 normal children and adults, 11 GH-deficient children before and after therapy with 0.1 U/kg GH im daily for 5 days, and

Serum somatomedin activity and growth hormone level in obese men: dependence on degree of obesity and hyperlipidemia.

Experimental and clinical endocrinology, 2009
The effect of body weight excess and hyperlipidemia on stimulated growth hormone (GH) secretion and serum somatomedin activity (SSA) has been investigated.

Purification of bovine somatomedin

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1975
Abstract A procedure for the purification of bovine somatomedin (SM 4 ) is presented. The purification scheme utilizes ultrafiltration through membranes of nominal mol. wt. cutoffs, molecular sieve chromatography and finally iso-electric focusing.

Growth Hormone and Somatomedin

1974
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the growth hormone and somatomedin. It is well established that growth hormone in vivo promotes skeletal growth and protein synthesis. Growth hormone promotes protein synthesis by stimulating the appearance in the tissues of a secondary factor, sulfation factor or somatomedin, which transfers ...

Somatomedin Inhibitor in Uremia*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1984
In uremia, poor growth occurs despite normal to increased levels of insulin and GH. Since serum somatomedin levels measured by RIA and radioreceptor assay are normal in patients with renal failure, while serum somatomedin activity measured by bioassay is low but increased by dialysis, we asked if somatomedin activity could be decreased due to the ...
