The effects of insulin and growth hormone on the release of somatomedin by the isolated rat liver.
Endocrinology, 1976Livers from hypophysectomized (hypox) rats were perfused with oxygenated Waymouth's medium in a system which permitted continuous recirculation for separate 30 minute periods after which fresh medium was supplied.

Immunoreactive Somatomedin A in Human Serum*
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1979A RIA has been developed for somatomedin A (SM-A) utilizing Sepharose-bound antibodies. This assay, measuring SM-A, the insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2, and somatomedin C, allows determination in serum samples. In comparison with a serum standard, the mean serum levels in patients with acromegaly or GH deficiency and healthy subjects were 8.7 %/- 0.

The biosynthesis of somatomedins and their role in the fetus
Acta Endocrinologica, 1986Abstract The somatomedins are a family of hormones consisting of insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2 as well as their variant forms. These peptides have a direct growth-promoting action on fetal cells mediated through their interaction with Type I and II receptors distributed throughout the fetus.

The application of a human somatomedin-C radioimmunoassay for the determination of somatomedin-C in chicken plasma has been examined. Parallel inhibition of binding of 125I-labelled somatomedin-C to antisera raised against somatomedin-C was observed with

Diabetes, 1983
Diabetics may have normal somatomedins by radioimmunoassay yet decreased somatomedin activity by bioassay. The discrepancy appears due to circulating inhibitory factors; inhibitors in whole diabetic serum antagonize the action of both somatomedins and insulin via noncompetitive interactions.

The growth-promoting actions of GH are thought to be mediated by somatomedin(s) (Sms), but unilateral bone growth in hypophysectomized (HX) rats given local injections of human (h) GH has been reported. Using slightly different methods, we have confirmed

A RAPID SIMPLIFIED BIOASSAY FOR SOMATOMEDIN
Journal of Endocrinology, 1978A simplified, more rapid bioassay for the estimation of somatomedin activity, based on the porcine costal cartilage bioassay, is described. A micro-scale system based on the porcine costal cartilage assay is also described. These assay systems showed no decrease in sensitivity or precision, compared with other methods, as a result of the modifications.

The somatomedins, such as the insulin-like growth factors I and II, somatomedins A and C, and multiplication-stimulating activity, are small, growth hormone dependent polypeptides which are the assumed mediators of growth hormone action on extraskeletal tissues.
