The interaction of spermine and pentamines with DNA [PDF]
We studied the effects of spermine, two naturally-occurring pentamines isolated from the thermophile Thermus thermophilus and one synthetic pentamine on the aggregation and ‘melting’ temperature of calf-thymus DNA and on the B-to-Z transition of poly(dG-me5dC). All pentamines caused aggregation of DNA at much lower concentrations than that of spermine.

ABSTRACT Seed defence priming is emerging as a novel, cost‐efficient and environmentally safe tool for pest management. It has been proposed as a means to uncouple the defence‐growth trade‐off in plants by enhancing defence responses with minimal fitness costs, but the mechanisms underlying this role remain elusive.

Spermine causes caspase activation in leukaemia cells
Exposure of several leukaemia cell types to the polyamine spermine triggered caspase activation. In HL60 cells, the onset of caspase activity correlated with the accumulation of spermine, and was accompanied by the processing of the caspase-3 precursor ...

The Emerging Clinical Role of Spermine in Prostate Cancer
Spermine, a member of polyamines, exists in all organisms and is essential for normal cell growth and function. It is highly expressed in the prostate compared with other organs and is detectable in urine, tissue, expressed prostatic secretions, and ...

Activation of hepatic glutaminase by spermine [PDF]
Glutaminase activity in intact mitochondria from rat liver is activated by spermine, as indicated both by increased glutamate production from glutamine and by increased respiration with glutamine as sole substrate. Glutaminase activity assayed in membranes from frozen-thawed mitochondria, is activated by spermine about 6-fold at physiological ...

Abstract In addition to controlling muscle mass, myostatin may support oxidative metabolism and endurance. Loss of function through gene knockout or post‐natal blockade generally lowers muscle oxidative capacity and increases fatigability. These observations imply that myostatin activation could promote a more oxidative and less fatigable muscle ...

Astrocytic mGluR5 Regulation of Synaptic Transmission is Activity‐Dependent in Adult Rats
In adulthood, astrocytic mGluR5 increases synaptic efficacy through presynaptic A2ARs. This occurs when a small number of synapses are activated simultaneously. This pathway is abolished when numerous synapses are recruited. ABSTRACT Data accumulated over the last two decades have demonstrated that astrocytes play key roles in the regulation of ...

This review analyzes single/combined abiotic (light, water, nutrients, hormones) and biotic (microbes, yeast) elicitors regulating signaling, gene expression, and metabolism to boost plant secondary metabolites. It highlights synergistic multielicitor strategies for crop quality and functional foods, while critically addressing current limitations and ...

Different roles of spermine in glucocorticoid- and Fas-induced apoptosis
Two experimental systems representative of the mitochondrial and death receptor apoptotic pathways are the dexamethasone-induced programmed cell death in mouse thymocytes and the antibody-mediated cross-ligation of the Fas receptor in the human leukemic ...
