Sphingosine and Sphingosine 1 Phosphate in the Brain

2011
Sphingosine is an 18-carbon amino alcohol with an unsaturated hydrocarbon chain. It is found in sphingolipids (cerbroside, sulfatide, and ganglioside) as well as phospholipid (sphingomyelin) (Fig. 9.1). Sphingomyelin (SM) is the major membrane sphingolipid and is the precursor for ceramide and sphingosine.

Sphingosine 1-Phosphate Breakdown in Platelets

Journal of Biochemistry, 2004
We examined the formation of sphingolipid mediators in platelets, which abundantly store, and release extracellularly, sphingosine 1-phosphate (Sph-1-P). Challenging [(3)H]Sph-labeled platelet suspensions with thrombin or 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) resulted in a decrease in Sph-1-P formation and an increase in sphingosine (Sph ...

The roles of sphingosine-1-phosphate in asthma

Molecular Immunology, 2002
Asthma is a complex condition in which exposure to environmental antigens induces inflammatory reactions in the airway characterized by activation of mast cells and eosinophils. Mast cells are known to be the main effector cells in eliciting IgE-mediated allergic response.
