Stem Cells and Cancer Stem Cells
2015Nowadays, the definition “cancer stem cells” (CSCs) is widely accepted in the science community. Although, some authors think that this is a new definition in biology, the idea of CSCs has existed for more than 50 years. In recent years, the relations between “stem cells” and “cancer stem cells” gradually explored.

Pancreatology, 2007
In this issue, 'Pancreatology and the Web' focuses on stem cell research, one of the 21st century's most exciting areas of science. Stem cell research has been advancing our knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms.

A stem cell for stem cells in murine haematopoiesis
Nature, 1982Mature erythrocytes and granulocytes have limited lifespans, do not replicate and must therefore be replenished constantly. They are derived from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) which are capable of self-renewal1. The numbers and properties of PSCs can be inferred in part from studies of their progeny.

AbstractBone and cartilage formation in the embryo and repair and turnover in the adult involve the progeny of a small number of cells called mesenchymal stem cells. These cells divide, and their progeny become committed to a specific and distinctive phenotypic pathway, a lineage with discrete steps and, finally, end‐stage cells involved with ...

Stem cells are the building blocks of the embryo and they allow the phenomenal gain in size and complexity that accompanies early development. Stem cells are very much dependent on their environment to maintain the stem cell phenotype and easily begin to differentiate into adult cell types when removed from the stem cell niche.

Two opposing descriptions of so-called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exist at this time. One sees MSCs as the postnatal, self-renewing, and multipotent stem cells for the skeleton. This cell coincides with a specific type of bone marrow perivascular cell.
