Cell Membrane Vesicle Camouflaged Artificial Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Artificial cells camouflaged with a cell membrane vesicle coating are able to assemble into synthetic aggregates that exhibit rudimentary communication capabilities. Additionally, when these artificial cells are equipped with antioxidant capabilities, they are able to protect the intracellular homeostasis in HepG2 cells present in semi‐synthetic ...

Competence in Streptococcus pneumoniae and Close Commensal Relatives: Mechanisms and Implications

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2019
The mitis group of streptococci comprises species that are common colonizers of the naso-oral-pharyngeal tract of humans. Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus mitis are close relatives and share ~60–80% of orthologous genes, but still present ...

The pathogenicity of the Streptococcus genus [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 2013
Streptococcus infections are still one of the important problems facing contemporary medicine. As the World Health Organization (WHO) warns, Streptococcus pneumoniae is responsible for the highest number of pneumonia cases all over the world. Despite an increasing number of pneumococcal vaccinations, incidences of disease connected to this pathogen's ...

Streptococcus mutans membrane vesicles inhibit the biofilm formation of Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis

open access: yesAMB Express, 2022
AbstractStreptococcus mutans, whose main virulence factor is glucosyltransferase (Gtf), has a substantial impact on the development of dental caries. S. mutans membrane vesicles (MVs), which are rich in Gtfs, have been shown to affect biofilm formation of other microorganisms. Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis are initial colonizers of

A Visible Light‐Responsive Hydrogel to Study the Effect of Dynamic Tissue Stiffness on Cellular Mechanosensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A visible light‐responsive polyacrylamide‐azobenzene hydrogel enables safe, reversible stiffness control for studying cell mechanobiology without harmful UV exposure. This approach reveals stem cells respond rapidly to mechanical changes, showing altered shape and protein distribution within one hour.

Serotypes and antimicrobial resistance of meningeal isolates of Streptococcus pneumonia. Cuba, 2007-2012

open access: yesVacciMonitor, 2014
An observational study was conducted to know the serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae responsible for meningitis in Cuba, where there is no vaccine yet to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease.

Circuitry Rewiring Directly Couples Competence to Predation in the Gut Dweller Streptococcus salivarius

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: Small distortions in transcriptional networks might lead to drastic phenotypical changes, especially in cellular developmental programs such as competence for natural transformation.

Stillbirth With Group B Streptococcus Disease Worldwide: Systematic Review and Meta-analyses

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2017
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is associated with invasive disease in utero and stillbirth. We estimated that 1% of all stillbirths in developed countries and 4% in Africa were associated with GBS.

3D Microtumors Representing Ovarian Cancer Minimal Residual Disease Respond to the Fatty Acid Oxidation Inhibitor Perhexiline

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Minimal residual disease (MRD) leads to cancer relapse and poor survival in ovarian cancer. The lack of representative 3D models limits therapy development. The microfluidics‐based high throughput 3D microtumor platform described here generates clinically‐relevant MRD models. The 3D microtumors recapitulate the molecular signatures of MRD from patients.
