In vitro properties of patient serum predict clinical outcome after high dose rate brachytherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Following high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR‐BT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), patients were classified as responders and nonresponders. Post‐therapy serum induced increased BrdU incorporation and Cyclin E expression of Huh7 and HepG2 cells in nonresponders, but decreased levels in responders.

EFFECT OF PERIHARVEST HANDLING ON WELFARE STATUS OF SLAUGHTER PIGS AND INTRINSIC PORK QUALITY. REVIEW OF RECENT FINDINGS

open access: yesScientific Papers Animal Science and Biotechnologies, 2023
There is a growing concern of consumers that the meat producing animals are bred, reared, handled and slaughtered in ways that are sympathetic to their welfare status.

Impact of alternative electrical stunning parameters on the ability of broilers to recover consciousness and meat qualityc1

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2017
Broilers in the United States are typically electrically stunned using low voltage‐high frequency (12‐38 V, ≥400 Hz) DC or AC water bath stunners. In the European Union, however, broilers are required to be electrocuted using high voltage‐low frequency ...

A synthetic benzoxazine dimer derivative targets c‐Myc to inhibit colorectal cancer progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Benzoxazine dimer derivatives bind to the bHLH‐LZ region of c‐Myc, disrupting c‐Myc/MAX complexes, which are evaluated from SAR analysis. This increases ubiquitination and reduces cellular c‐Myc. Impairing DNA repair mechanisms is shown through proteomic analysis.

Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.

Sperm whale predator-prey interactions involve chasing and buzzing, but no acoustic stunning

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
The sperm whale carries a hypertrophied nose that generates powerful clicks for long-range echolocation. However, it remains a conundrum how this bizarrely shaped apex predator catches its prey.

CDK11 inhibition induces cytoplasmic p21WAF1 splice variant by p53 stabilisation and SF3B1 inactivation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.

Effect of Two Different Stunning Methods on the Quality Traits of Rabbit Meat

open access: yesAnimals, 2020
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of two different stunning methods on the level of blood stress indicators (cortisol, insulin, glucose) and rabbit meat quality.

Is ongoing ritual slaughter of livestock justifiable in modern America?

open access: yesJournal of Applied Animal Research, 2021
All livestock animals raised for food in America must be rendered immediately unconscious prior to slaughter to prevent needless suffering. An exception to this legal requirement exists for ritually-slaughtered animals.

Bleeding Efficiency, Microbiological Quality and Oxidative Stability of Meat from Goats Subjected to Slaughter without Stunning in Comparison with Different Methods of Pre-Slaughter Electrical Stunning

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
The influence of pre-slaughter electrical stunning techniques and slaughter without stunning on bleeding efficiency and shelf life of chevon during a 14 d postmortem aging were assessed.
