Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Cyclooctanaminium hydrogen succinate monohydrate [PDF]

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E Structure Reports Online, 2012
In the title hydrated salt, C8H18N+·C4H5O4−·H2O, the cyclooctyl ring of the cation is disordered over two positions in a 0.833 (3):0.167 (3) ratio. The structure contains various O—H.·O and N—H...O interactions, forming a hydrogen-bonded layer of molecules perpendicular to thecaxis.

Synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins from various bio-derived platform molecules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Utilisation of bio-derived platform molecules in polymer synthesis has advantages which are, broadly, twofold; to digress from crude oil dependence of the polymer industry and secondly to reduce the environmental impact of the polymer synthesis through ...

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

An X-ray and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) structural study of α-tocopheryl and 2,2,5,7,8-pentamethylchroman-6-yl succinates

open access: yesJournal of Saudi Chemical Society, 2019
α-Tocopheryl succinate (α-TOS) is a very promising anticancer agent; however, the mechanism of its action and the role of the succinic moiety in biological activity still remains unclear.

4-Aminopyridinium hydrogen succinate [PDF]

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E Structure Reports Online, 2009
In the title salt,C5H7N2 +·C4H5O4 −, the asymmetric unit comprises an amino-pyridinium cation and a hydrogen succinate anion as protonation of the aromatic N atom of the 4-amino-pyridine molecule has occurred. The crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular O H O and N H O hydrogen bonds that lead to a two-dimensional array.

Squarate desymmetrisation–ozonolysis as an approach to β-substituted-α-ketosuccinates and squalestatin synthesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Silylated tertiary alcohols from 1,2-addition of alkyllithiums to dialkyl squarates undergo alkene ozonolysis to give β-substituted-α-keto-β-(silyloxy)succinates. With 3-(triethylsilyloxy)butyllithium the methodology was applied to the 2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.

Exploiting metabolic adaptations to overcome dabrafenib treatment resistance in melanoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that dabrafenib‐resistant melanoma cells undergo mitochondrial remodeling, leading to elevated respiration and ROS production balanced by stronger antioxidant defenses. This altered redox state promotes survival despite mitochondrial damage but renders resistant cells highly vulnerable to ROS‐inducing compounds such as PEITC, highlighting redox

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Antibiofilm activity of a chionodracine‐derived peptide by NMR‐based metabolomics of cell‐free supernatant of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...
