FOOD INTAKE CONTROL IN SUCKLING LAMBS

Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 1984
The increased fat content of milk diet diminished food intake in suckling lambs. A singificant inhibitory effect on food intake was also observed after the administration of glucose and lactose per os. It is supposed that food intake is regulated through peripheral lipostatic and glucostatic mechanisms.

Effects of Bovine Growth Hormone in Suckling Lambs

Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes, 2009
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of bovine growth hormone (bGH) on body growth of suckling lambs. Suckling Merino lambs (fed on milk replacer from 4th day of life) were daily injected from 10th to 38th day of life with 80 micrograms bGH/kg b.w. Only insignificant increase of body weight was observed after 4 weeks of GH treatment.

Ewe colostrum and subsequent lamb suckling behaviour

Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture, 1996
Behavioural and colostral data were obtained from 70 parous Border Leicester x Merino ewes (and their lambs) that lambed in 0.25 ha paddocks. Data collected included a colostral sample immediately postpartum, lamb weight and temperature, site of parturition and lamb sucking attempts to 48 h post-partum.

Illthrift in suckling lambs attributed to lung pyogranuloma formation

Veterinary Record, 2009
A WIDE range of factors may cause or contribute to illthrift in suckling lambs ([Radostits and others 2000][1]). Chronic respiratory infections are recognised as a very important cause of retarded growth in lambs, one of them being lung abscessation, in which illthrift is attributed to toxaemia ([

Breed effect on carcase and meat quality of suckling lambs

Meat Science, 1997
The influence of breed on carcase and meat quality traits was studied in 48 suckling lambs (approximately 1 month old) from the Churra, Castellana and Manchega Spanish breeds and Awassi crosses. Carcase quality traits were determined by visual assessment and objective measurements. Meat quality was assessed by instrumental and sensory analysis.

Meat quality in suckling lambs: effect of pre-slaughter handling

Meat Science, 2005
Thirty-three suckling lambs of the Manchega breed were used to compare the effects of pre-slaughter handling (PSH) on initial meat quality and at 7 days post-mortem. Lambs were distributed into three groups: electrically stunned (ESL; n=15), stunned using CO(2) (GSL; n=10) and slaughtered without previous stunning (USL; n=8). Meat quality was evaluated

Changes in small intestinal mucosa morphology and cell renewal in suckling, prolonged-suckling, and weaned lambs

American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1991
No information concerning the effect of weaning on intestinal cell proliferation is currently available in large species with early intestinal morphogenesis, a group including most domestic animals and humans. Changes in intestinal morphology and epithelial cell renewal were investigated in 1-, 5-, and 8-wk-old suckling and 8-wk-old weaned lambs after

Immunization protocols against Cryptosporidium parvum in ovines: protection in suckling lambs

Veterinary Parasitology, 2005
Ovine colostrum and milk from immunized ewes were tested for their ability to prevent cryptosporidiosis in the lambs experimentally infected with 10(6) oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum at 36-48 h of age (day 0 post-infection). All lambs became infected and developed clinical cryptosporidiosis.

Lambs prevented from suckling their mothers display behavioral, immune and endocrine disturbances

Physiology & Behavior, 2003
The aim of the experiment was to assess the effects of either maternal deprivation or prevented suckling on lambs. Thirty Comisana lambs were assigned to a control dam-suckled group (DS) and two test groups of 10 each. Test lambs were maintained with their mothers 24 to 30 h after parturition and subsequently offered ewe milk from buckets: EM lambs ...
