Ewe colostrum and subsequent lamb suckling behaviour
Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture, 1996Behavioural and colostral data were obtained from 70 parous Border Leicester x Merino ewes (and their lambs) that lambed in 0.25 ha paddocks. Data collected included a colostral sample immediately postpartum, lamb weight and temperature, site of parturition and lamb sucking attempts to 48 h post-partum.

Illthrift in suckling lambs attributed to lung pyogranuloma formation
Veterinary Record, 2009A WIDE range of factors may cause or contribute to illthrift in suckling lambs ([Radostits and others 2000][1]). Chronic respiratory infections are recognised as a very important cause of retarded growth in lambs, one of them being lung abscessation, in which illthrift is attributed to toxaemia ([

Breed effect on carcase and meat quality of suckling lambs
Meat Science, 1997The influence of breed on carcase and meat quality traits was studied in 48 suckling lambs (approximately 1 month old) from the Churra, Castellana and Manchega Spanish breeds and Awassi crosses. Carcase quality traits were determined by visual assessment and objective measurements. Meat quality was assessed by instrumental and sensory analysis.

Meat quality in suckling lambs: effect of pre-slaughter handling
Meat Science, 2005Thirty-three suckling lambs of the Manchega breed were used to compare the effects of pre-slaughter handling (PSH) on initial meat quality and at 7 days post-mortem. Lambs were distributed into three groups: electrically stunned (ESL; n=15), stunned using CO(2) (GSL; n=10) and slaughtered without previous stunning (USL; n=8). Meat quality was evaluated

No information concerning the effect of weaning on intestinal cell proliferation is currently available in large species with early intestinal morphogenesis, a group including most domestic animals and humans. Changes in intestinal morphology and epithelial cell renewal were investigated in 1-, 5-, and 8-wk-old suckling and 8-wk-old weaned lambs after

Immunization protocols against Cryptosporidium parvum in ovines: protection in suckling lambs
Veterinary Parasitology, 2005Ovine colostrum and milk from immunized ewes were tested for their ability to prevent cryptosporidiosis in the lambs experimentally infected with 10(6) oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum at 36-48 h of age (day 0 post-infection). All lambs became infected and developed clinical cryptosporidiosis.

Lambs prevented from suckling their mothers display behavioral, immune and endocrine disturbances
Physiology & Behavior, 2003The aim of the experiment was to assess the effects of either maternal deprivation or prevented suckling on lambs. Thirty Comisana lambs were assigned to a control dam-suckled group (DS) and two test groups of 10 each. Test lambs were maintained with their mothers 24 to 30 h after parturition and subsequently offered ewe milk from buckets: EM lambs ...

Transfer of Radiocesium from Different Environmental Sources to Ewes and Suckling Lambs
Health Physics, 1989Indoor experiments are described that compare the transfer of radiocesium to ewe and lamb tissues from different sources. Lactating ewes were fed either perennial ryegrass contaminated by Chernobyl fallout, or saltmarsh vegetation contaminated by marine discharges from the Sellafield reprocessing plant.

Observations on the suckling behaviour of young lambs
The British Journal of Animal Behaviour, 1956Summary Under natural conditions, twin lamps up to 6 weeks old, suckled on average 22 times in 16 daylight hours. Single lambs suckled on average 14 times in 6 daylight hours. The duration of suckling periods became shorter and less frequent as the lambs grew older.
