In this chapter we will consider two main types of plasticity. First, we will discuss short-term plasticity, the modulation of synaptic strength on the time scale of milliseconds to seconds. Second, we will learn about long-term plasticity, long-lasting changes to synaptic strength that form the basis of learning and memory.
