Loxoscelism and negative pressure wound therapy (vacuum‐assisted closure): an experimental study

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 7, Issue 6, Page 488-492, December 2010., 2010
Brown recluse spider (Loxosceles) bites cause lesions ranging from chronic necrotic ulcers to acute life‐threatening sepsis. Based on our experience in treating acute and chronic wounds with negative pressure, we postulated that vacuum‐assisted closure (VAC) would be valuable in this application.

Negative pressure wound therapy: treating a venomous insect bite

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 88-92, March 2007., 2007
Abstract Reports of spider bites appear throughout North America. Bites associated with the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles recluse) cause serious medical complications because the venom of this spider contains a powerful necrotising agent with the potential to cause severe cutaneous necrosis.

A novel hyaluronidase from brown spider (Loxosceles intermedia) venom (Dietrich's Hyaluronidase): from cloning to functional characterization. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2013
Loxoscelism is the designation given to clinical symptoms evoked by Loxosceles spider's bites. Clinical manifestations include skin necrosis with gravitational spreading and systemic disturbs. The venom contains several enzymatic toxins.

Extracellular matrix molecules as targets for brown spider venom toxins

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2001
Loxoscelism, the term used to describe lesions and clinical manifestations induced by brown spider's venom (Loxosceles genus), has attracted much attention over the last years. Brown spider bites have been reported to cause a local and acute inflammatory
