Telomeres

open access: yes
Telomeres facilitate the protection of natural ends of chromosomes from constitutive exposure to the DNA damage response (DDR). This is most likely achieved by a lariat structure that hides the linear telomeric DNA through protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions.

A Systemic Reflection On Why Biology Is Best : E(s) ∞$$ \infty $$ mc2 Sentience, Consciousness and Transcendance?

open access: yesSystems Research and Behavioral Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The short essay makes a case that a post biological world will be a devolution. Sentience is a relational process linked with the awe and wonder we experience in relation to one another and our shared habitat. The voiceless need to be protected by extending solidarity on the basis of sentience—a normative plea, but also on the basis of ...

Mate desertion affects offspring survival, development and physiology in a songbird with multiple parental strategies

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Sexual conflict affects the amount and duration of offspring care each parent invests, resulting in multiple parental care strategies sometimes coexisting within a single population.

The ecology of gestational growth in a wild cooperative mammal

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Using data from hundreds of wild pregnant meerkats, Thorley et al show that gestational growth varies widely, is shaped by nutrition but not social conditions, and improves pup survival without shortening telomeres. The fitness consequences and limited flexibility of prenatal growth likely enhance selection on early postnatal growth plasticity ...

Living Low and Dry: Costs of and Resilience to Soil Hydric Stress in a Fossorial Amphisbaenian Reptile

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Soil drought imposes moderate, temporary costs on a strictly fossorial amphisbaenian reptile. However, these animals seem to cope with, at least, moderately short droughts thanks to their peculiar adaptations to living in an underground environment. ABSTRACT The physiological traits of animals can be strongly influenced by climatic fluctuations, and ...
