The purpose of this review is to summarize the most recent discoveries in the field of phenotypic and functional characterization of human and murine Th17 cells.Human Th17 cells express CD161 and exclusively originate from CD161 precursors present in umbilical cord blood and newborn thymus in response to the combined activity of IL-1beta and IL-23.

Pharmacological Modulation of Th17
Recent Patents on Inflammation & Allergy Drug Discovery, 2009Recently, a third subset of Th17 cells has been described. This T helper subset induces the release of chemokines and growth factors and causes neutrophil accumulation in several mammalian organs. Pharmacological intervention blocking Th17 generation as well as IL-17 signaling might prove useful in a variety of diseases including asthma, chronic ...

Naïve T cells are multipotential precursors that differentiate into various effector subsets, such as T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 cells, which are characterized by their distinct functions. The IL-17-producing T helper (Th17) cell has been recently identified as a new subset of the T helper cell and a mediator of inflammation associated with various ...

Targeting the Th17 pathway in psoriasis
Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 2012Abstract Review of preclinical and clinical evidence implicating Th17 cells in psoriasis, and the therapeutic approaches to target this pathway. In recent years, the classic paradigm of Th1/Th2 CD4+ T cell-mediated immunity has evolved to include the IL-17A-producing Th17 subset, a distinct proinflammatory CD4+ T cell ...

Chronic inflammation is a key feature of many airway diseases. Leukocyte accumulation in the lung has the capacity to mediate many aspects of the pathophysiology of such diseases including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Until recently, the CD4+ lymphocyte component of these inflammatory influxes was thought to consist of Th1 ...

CD4+T cells, upon activation and expansion, develop into different T helper cell subsets with different cytokine profiles and distinct effector functions. Until recently, T cells were divided into Th1 or Th2 cells, depending on the cytokines they produce.

Contextualizing TH17 cells in cancer
Nature Reviews ImmunologyThe immune system has evolved intricate and sophisticated mechanisms to recognize and eliminate tumours. Among these, T helper 17 (TH17) cells seem to have a complex role in tumour immunity. Substantial evidence indicates that TH17 cells can impair the ability of immune cells to kill tumours, but growing research suggests that TH17 cells may also be ...
