High efficiency transfection of thymic epithelial cell lines and primary thymic epithelial cells by Nucleofection [PDF]
Thymic epithelial cells (TECs) are required for the development and differentiation of T cells and are sufficient for the positive and negative selection of developing T cells.

SummaryThe thymus consists of two distinct anatomical regions, the cortex and the medulla; medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) play a crucial role in establishing central T‐cell tolerance for self‐antigens. Although the understanding of mTEC development in thymic organogenesis as well as the regulation of their differentiation and maturation has ...

Intrathymic T cell development is a complex process that depends upon continuous guidance from thymus stromal cell microenvironments. The thymic epithelium within the thymic stroma comprises highly specialized cells with a high degree of anatomic, phenotypic, and functional heterogeneity.

Studies on thymic epithelial cells in vitro
Developmental & Comparative Immunology, 1998Thymic epithelial cells are unique in their ability to support positive selection and are essential throughout thymocyte development. Here, we describe a technique for measuring the proliferation of thymic epithelial cells by flow cytometry using a combination of BrdU and pancytokeratin labelling, and we examine the effects of different in vitro ...

We show that thymic epithelial cells grown under serum‐free conditions in a chemically defined culture medium can act as veto cells in vitro. The veto activity of thymic epithelial cells results in inactivation of specific alloreactive cytotoxic T‐cell precursors at the clonal level.

Thymic epithelial cells derived from the cultures of thymic nurse cells
Immunology Letters, 1984Thymic epithelial cells are derived from the cultures of thymic nurse cells. These cultures are free from fibroblasts and macrophages. The epithelial nature of these cells is confirmed by demonstrating the presence of keratin filaments in them. These epithelial cells show heterogeneity in shape, size and distribution of keratin filaments.

Generation of a complete thymic microenvironment by MTS24+ thymic epithelial cells
Nature Immunology, 2002The epithelial component of the thymic microenvironment is indispensable for the generation of T lymphocytes. Although the heterogeneity of this epithelium is well documented, little is known about precursor-progeny relationships between distinct thymic epithelial lineages.

Thymic epithelial cell culture
Microscopy Research and Technique, 1997Culture of epithelial cells from the thymus of children and laboratory animals has been used for more than two decades to evaluate both the nature of these cells and their importance in the selection and maturation of functional T cells. Especially by the use of serum-free cultures and by establishment of cell lines from cultured thymic epithelial ...
