Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation in thymic epithelial cells*

Immunological Reviews, 2021
AbstractThe thymus is required for the development of both adaptive and innate‐like T cell subsets. There is keen interest in manipulating thymic function for therapeutic purposes in circumstances of autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, and for purposes of immunotherapy.

Replication of cytomegalovirus in human thymic epithelial cells

Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 1989
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has often been cited as a cause of immune suppression in children, yet little is known of the mechanisms through which this agent might affect immune function. We have succeeded in using CMV to productively infect cultured human fetal and infantile thymic epithelial (TE) cells. Morphological changes were apparent by 2-4 days after

Antibodies to thymic epithelial cells in myasthenia gravis

Journal of Neuroimmunology, 1991
The presence of anti-thymus antibodies was investigated in the serum of 36 patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). Using an immunofluorescence technique on frozen thymic sections, we found 45% of patients sera reacting with normal or MG thymuses. Staining was confined to subcapsular and medullary keratin-positive epithelial cells.

Thymic reticulo-epithelial cells

Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy, 2007
The reticulo-epithelial (RE) cellular network of the thymic stromal cellular microenvironment plays a vital role in neuroendocrine regulation and lymphoid cell homing and development. Transmission electronmicroscopic observations have confirmed that there are four functional subtypes of medullar RE cells: undifferentiated; squamous; villous; and cystic.

Effects of tacrolimus on rat thymic epithelial cells

Transplantation Proceedings, 2000
FK506 is an immunosuppressive agent that was discovered in Japan. Many experiments on organ transplantation have shown the prolongation of allograft survival in animals by treatment with FK506. Previous studies have also shown that FK506 has a remarkable immunosuppressive effect and improves the outcome of liver transplantation.

Human Thymic Epithelial Cell Cultures

2003
The thymus is a very complex organ that regulates T-cell production Thymocytes (immature T-cells) constitute by far the largest cellular population in the organ (several billions of thymocytes in a child's thymus), but small numbers of other hematopoietic cells are found in the intrathymic microenvironment, such as thymic monocytes, macrophages ...

Thymic epithelial cell heterogeneity: TEC by TEC

Nature Reviews Immunology, 2019
The generation of a functional T cell repertoire in the thymus is mainly orchestrated by thymic epithelial cells (TECs), which provide developing T cells with cues for their navigation, proliferation, differentiation and survival. The TEC compartment has been segregated historically into two major populations of medullary TECs and cortical TECs, which ...

Thymic epithelial cells in age‐dependent involution

Microscopy Research and Technique, 2003
AbstractAging involves morphological and functional alterations within the microenvironment of the thymus where heterogenous populations of thymic epithelial cells (TEC) play the main roles. The studies performed to date on thymic involution signalize a disturbed interaction between individual thymic compartments that disrupt thymocyte‐TEC interactions

Clonogenic Culture of Mouse Thymic Epithelial Cells

2019
The thymus plays an essential role in the development and selection of T cells by providing a unique microenvironment that is mainly composed of thymic epithelial cells (TECs). We previously identified stem cells of medullary TECs (mTECs) that are crucial for central tolerance induction using a novel clonogenic culture system.

Thymopoiesis requiresPax9 function in thymic epithelial cells

European Journal of Immunology, 2002
The epithelial thymic anlage develops from the third pharyngeal pouch. Pax9 is expressed in the entire pharyngeal endoderm, and its function is required for normal development of organs derived from pharyngeal pouches. Here, we show that in Pax9 null mice, the thymic anlage develops as an ectopic polyp-like structure in the larynx.
