Perceived Vertical and Lateropulsion: Clinical Syndromes, Localization, and Prognosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We present a clinical classification of central vestibular syndromes according to the three major planes of action of the vestibulo-ocular reflex: yaw, roll, and pitch.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The Science and Detection of Tilting [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 2016 ACM on International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval, 2016
Tilting refers to losing control due to negative emotions, behaving erratically, and thereby suffering adverse con- sequences. The term tilt originated in poker playing communities, where it is often a consequence of so called bad beats, i.e. losing with an unlikely-to-lose poker hand.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

A Private Law Approach to Privacy; Mandatory Law Obliged?

open access: yesSCRIPTed: A Journal of Law, Technology & Society, 2007
This article contests the general assumption that Directive 95/46/EC concerning the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data requires implementation into mandatory rules of law.

RunScribe Sacral Gait Lab™ Validation for Measuring Pelvic Kinematics during Human Locomotion at Different Speeds

open access: yesSensors, 2023
Optoelectronic motion capture systems are considered the gold standard for measuring walking and running kinematics parameters. However, these systems prerequisites are not feasible for practitioners as they entail a laboratory environment and time to ...

On enhanced tilt strategies for tilting trains [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on The Built Environment, Vol 88, 2006
This paper describes how many railways have taken tilting trains into operation on lines with horizontal curves with small radii. Tilting trains have vehicle bodies that can roll inwards, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration perceived by the passengers. Hence, tilting trains can run through curves at an enhanced speed.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Bias in Adjudication and the Promise of AI: Challenges to Procedural Fairness

open access: yesLaw, Technology and Humans
Empirical research demonstrates that judges are prone to cognitive and social biases, both of which can reduce the accuracy of judgements and introduce extra-legal influences on judicial decisions. While these findings raise the important question of how
