A reassessment of tocopherol chemistry

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1964
Abstract This paper describes the presence in Nature of four methylated tocols (the 8-monomethyl, 5,8- and 7,8-dimethyl and 5,7,8-trimethyl derivatives) and the four related tocotrienols (for nomenclature see Bunyan, McHale, Green and Marcinkiewicz, 1961 ).

TOCOPHEROLS

1963
Publisher Summary This chapter describes tocopherols. Chemically, the tocopherol fraction of plant lipids is currently known to comprise two series of compounds, all derivatives of chroman-6-ol. The tocopherols are pseudo-phenols and can be readily extracted from Claisen's alkali.

Spectrofluorometric determination of tocopherols

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1959
Abstract A convenient and sensitive method for the differential determination of free and esterified tocopherols utilizing ultraviolet spectrofluorometry is presented. The introduction of a stoichiometric excess of ethereal LiAlH 4 into hydrocarbon solutions of tocopherol esters was found to result in a quantitative cleavage to the free alcohols ...

Tocopherol Deficiency in Man

New England Journal of Medicine, 1965
THE pathophysiologic effects of vitamin E deficiency in man remain uncertain some forty years after isolation and purification of this vitamin. Although tocopherol depletion in infants and children with steatorrhea is well documented, no clear-cut clinical syndrome secondary to tocopherol deficiency is recognized.1 , 2 Certain in vitro phenomena of ...

Human adiposeα-tocopherol andγ-tocopherol kinetics during and after 1 y ofα-tocopherol supplementation [PDF]

open access: possibleThe American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1994
Alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol were monitored in human adipose by using needle biopsies in four subjects during a 1-y supplementation trial with 800 mg all-rac-alpha-tocopherol/d, and for 1 additional year after cessation of supplement. Some increase in adipose alpha-tocopherol (per milligram adipose cholesterol) and a more consistent decrease ...

Simultaneous determination of alpha-tocopherol and retinol in plasma or red cells by high pressure liquid chromatography.

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1979
This paper describes a rapid, microprocedure for the simultaneous determination of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and retinol (vitamin A) in plasma, and of alpha-tocopherol alone in red cells since cells do not contain retinol. A total lipid extract from 0.

Intracellular Localization of α‐Tocopherol Transfer Protein and α‐Tocopherol

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2004
Abstract: The mechanism of action of tocopherol transfer protein (TTP) and its role in the intracellular processing of vitamin E were investigated using confocal fluorescence microscopy. The results from this work suggest that TTP functions by transporting vitamin E from endocytic organelles to other locations in the cell.

Effects of various tocopherol‐containing diets on tocopherol secretion into bile

Lipids, 2000
Abstractγ‐Tocopherol is abundant in common vegetable oil, but its concentration in plasma and liver is much lower than that of α‐tocopherol. Discrimination between different forms of tocopherol is thought to take placevia the hepatic α‐tocopherol transfer protein (α‐TTP).

Influence of dietary α‐tocopherol on tocopherol concentrations in chick tissues

British Poultry Science, 1991
1. The effect of feeding alpha-tocopherol (5 to 180 micrograms/g diet) for 24 days on the concentrations of alpha-tocopherol in various chicken tissues was investigated. 2. Tissue alpha-tocopherol concentrations responded to dietary intake in the order: heart congruent to lung greater than liver greater than thigh muscle greater than brain, and in all ...
