Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Toll-like receptor 2 is increased in neurons in Parkinson’s disease brain and may contribute to alpha-synuclein pathology

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica, 2016
Inflammation is likely a key contributor to the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease (PD), a progressively debilitating neurodegenerative disease that is accompanied by a pathological accumulation of the α-synuclein protein in a staged manner through the ...

Fibronectin III 13-14 Domains Induce Joint Damage via Toll-Like Receptor 4 Activation and Synergize with Interleukin-1 and Tumour Necrosis Factor

open access: yes, 2011
Cartilage loss is a feature of chronic arthritis. It results from degradation of the extracellular matrix which is composed predominantly of aggrecan and type II collagen.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Randomized controlled trial of vitamin d supplementation on toll-like receptor-2 (tlr-2) and toll-like receptor-4 (tlr-4) in tuberculosis spondylitis patients

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2023
Background Tuberculosis spondylitis accounts for approximately 50% of all cases of skeletal tuberculosis. Vitamin D plays a role in the immune system. Vitamin D helps in the activation of TLR-2 and TLR-4, which play a role in the process of tuberculosis ...

Expression and regulation of the pattern recognition receptors Toll‐like receptor‐2 and Toll‐like receptor‐4 in the human placenta

open access: yesImmunology, 2002
SummaryThe placenta constitutes a physical and immunological barrier against invading infectious agents and has been suggested to be a pregnancy‐specific component of the innate immune system. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and regulation of Toll‐like receptors‐2 and ‐4 (TLR2 and TLR4) in the human placenta, because these ...

Homology Modeling of Toll-Like Receptor Ligand-Binding Domains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are in the front-line during the initiation of an innate immune response against invading pathogens. TLRs are type I transmembrane proteins that are expressed on the surface of immune system cells.

The Turkey Ig-like receptor family: identification, expression and function. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The chicken leukocyte receptor complex located on microchromosome 31 encodes the chicken Ig-like receptors (CHIR), a vastly expanded gene family which can be further divided into three subgroups: activating CHIR-A, bifunctional CHIR-AB and inhibitory ...

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Type 2 Impairs Macrophage Responsiveness to Toll-Like Receptor Ligation with the Exception of Toll-Like Receptor 7. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a member of the Flaviviridae family. BVDV isolates are classified into two biotypes based on the development of cytopathic (cp) or non-cytopathic (ncp) effects in epithelial cell culture.
