This work aimed at evaluating the influence of organic solvents and stationary phases in the extraction with glass beads and chromatographic purification of carotenoids, especially torularhodin, from Sporobolomyces ruberrimus.The combinations of acetone:hexane (1:1 v/v) and acetone:ethyl ether (1:1 v/v) yielded 171.74 and 172.19 μg of total carotenoids.

The enzymatic conversion of torulene to retinal is demonstrated in in vitro tests using beta-carotene 15,15'-dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.21) from the rabbit small intestine mucosa. This is the first evidence for the potent vitamin A activity of torulene. Little amounts of retinal also formed from methyl ester of torularhodin and from torularhodin.
