Toxic medications in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

Mitochondrion, 2019
Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited mitochondrial disorder characterized by acute bilateral vision loss. The pathophysiology involves reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can be affected by medications. This article reviews the evidence for medications with demonstrated and theoretical effects on mitochondrial function,

Nutritional and Toxic Optic Neuropathies

2014
The symptoms and signs of nutritional and toxic optic neuropathies are similar in that they usually present simultaneously and bilaterally. Symptoms are progressive with bilateral symmetric visual loss without pain. Some patients may initially only observe dyschromatopsia, such that certain colors, such as red, are not as bright.

Mitochondrial Impairment in Antibiotic Induced Toxic Optic Neuropathies

Current Eye Research, 2018
There is growing evidence for the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the toxic optic neuropathies. Due to the structural similarities between antibiotic targets and mitochondrial machinery, several antibiotics known to cause optic neuropathy have deleterious effects on mitochondrial function.

Re-Treatment With Ethambutol After Toxic Optic Neuropathy

Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, 2017
Abstract: There are no data in the literature regarding the safety of re-treatment with ethambutol for recurrent mycobacterial infection after prior ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy. We describe a patient who developed optic neuropathy attributed to ethambutol, recovered fully after drug withdrawal, and tolerated a 14-month long re ...

Asymmetric bilateral demyelinating optic neuropathy from tacrolimus toxicity

Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 2011
To report the first histopathologic description of optic nerve demyelination from tacrolimus (FK 506) toxicity in the absence of toxic levels of tacrolimus in a patient presenting with asymmetric bilateral visual loss after 5 years of tacrolimus therapy. We report a patient status post cardiac and renal transplantation who developed severe, progressive ...

Toxic and Nutritional Optic Neuropathy

2007
Abstract Although the clinical profiles of patients with toxic optic neuropathy differ from the profiles of those with nutritional optic neuropathy, the pattern of visual loss is similar. It is characterized by decreased visual acuity with relative preservation of peripheral vision.

Toxic and Deficiency Optic Neuropathy

2016
These diseases primarily affect the optic segment of the visual pathway. The damage of optic nerve develops owing to the neurotoxic effect of exogenous substances and/or due to nutritional factors. In etiological point of view, the much more common group of optic nerve diseases originating from dietary insufficiencies and nicotine-alcohol abuse should ...
