Friends or Foes? Emerging Impacts of Biological Toxins [PDF]

open access: yesTrends in Biochemical Sciences, 2019
Toxins are substances produced from biological sources (e.g., animal, plants, microorganisms) that have deleterious effects on a living organism. Despite the obvious health concerns of being exposed to toxins, they are having substantial positive impacts

Biological Toxins as the Potential Tools for Bioterrorism [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2019
Biological toxins are a heterogeneous group produced by living organisms. One dictionary defines them as “Chemicals produced by living organisms that have toxic properties for another organism”. Toxins are very attractive to terrorists for use in acts of bioterrorism. The first reason is that many biological toxins can be obtained very easily.

Epigenetic Effects of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers on Human Health. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Disruption of epigenetic regulation by environmental toxins is an emerging area of focus for understanding the latter's impact on human health. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), one such group of toxins, are an environmentally pervasive class of ...

A Novel Platform for Research on Toxins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Toxins are ubiquitous in nature and as such they impact our daily life. Toxins may come from a wide variety of sources and influence a myriad of biological functions.

Biological Activity of Heated Diphtheria Toxin [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1973
Diphtheria toxin splits into two fragments when heated at 100 C for 10 min in a phosphate buffer. The separated fragments have molecular weights of 24,000 and 39,000, respectively. These molecular weights are similar to those of the A and B fragments found in diphtheria toxin preparations after thiol reduction.

Transcriptional cellular responses in midgut tissue of Aedes aegypti larvae following intoxication with Cry11Aa toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BackgroundAlthough much is known about the mechanism of action of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry toxins, the target tissue cellular responses to toxin activity is less understood.

The intestine and the kidneys : a bad marriage can be hazardous [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The concept that the intestine and chronic kidney disease influence each other, emerged only recently. The problem is multifaceted and bidirectional. On one hand, the composition of the intestinal microbiota impacts uraemic retention solute production ...

The VgrG Proteins Are "à la Carte" Delivery Systems for Bacterial Type VI Effectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The bacterial type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a supra-molecular complex akin to bacteriophage tails, with VgrG proteins acting as a puncturing device. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa H1-T6SS has been extensively characterized.
