Stability of the transthyretin molecule as a key factor in the interaction with a-beta peptide--relevance in Alzheimer's disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Transthyretin (TTR) protects against A-Beta toxicity by binding the peptide thus inhibiting its aggregation. Previous work showed different TTR mutations interact differently with A-Beta, with increasing affinities correlating with decreasing ...

The Journey of Human Transthyretin: Synthesis, Structure Stability, and Catabolism

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2022
Transthyretin (TTR) is a homotetrameric protein mainly synthesised by the liver and the choroid plexus whose function is to carry the thyroid hormone thyroxine and the retinol-binding protein bound to retinol in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid.

The Immune Microenvironment in Liver Cancer: From Analysis to Targeting

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review explores how smart nanomedicines overcome the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in liver cancer. It details targeted delivery strategies and immune reprogramming mechanisms, including remodeling abnormal physiology, modulating metabolism, and inducing immunogenic cell death. The article highlights the paradigm shift toward multimodal

Differences in transcription between free-living and CO_2-activated third-stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: The disease caused by Haemonchus contortus, a blood-feeding nematode of small ruminants, is of major economic importance worldwide. The infective third-stage larva (L3) of this gastric nematode is enclosed in a cuticle (sheath) and, once

Co‐Opting MBNL‐Dependent Alternative Splicing Cassette Exons to Control Gene Therapy in Myotonic Dystrophy

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a highly variable, multisystemic genetic disorder caused by a CTG repeat expansion in the 3′ untranslated region of DMPK. Toxicity is exerted by repeat‐containing DMPK transcripts that sequester muscleblind‐like (MBNL) proteins and lead to deleterious yet predictable changes in alternative splicing.

Case Report: Transthyretin Glu54Leu—a rare mutation with predominant cardiac phenotype

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2023
We report two unrelated Bulgarian families with hereditary transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis due to a rare p.Glu74Leu (Glu54Leu) pathogenic variant found in seven individuals—three of them symptomatic.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)-derived Phase Angle (PA) is a practical aid to nutritional assessment in hospital in-patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Nutritional status can be difficult to assess. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)-derived phase angle (PA), and the plasma markers citrulline and transthyretin (pre-albumin) have the potential to assist, but the protocol of fasting and ...

Molecular mechanisms and emerging therapies in wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy

open access: yesHeart Failure Reviews
Wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTRwt-CM) is an underrecognized cause of heart failure due to misfolded wild-type transthyretin (TTRwt) myocardial deposition.

SGLT2 inhibitor therapy for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy: early tolerance and clinical response to dapagliflozin

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, 2022
Sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) improve clinical outcomes in heart failure patients with reduced and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), but have not yet been investigated in transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR ...
