Cytosolic Phosphoenoylpyruvate Carboxykinase Deficiency: Clinical, Biochemical, and Genetic Features of Five Non‐Finnish Patients

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cytosolic phosphoenoylpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK‐C) is an essential, rate‐limiting enzyme in the gluconeogenesis pathway. PEPCK‐C deficiency presents with hypoglycaemia, hyperlactataemia and hepatopathy, and was first reported in association with bi‐allelic PCK1 variants in 2014.

Evaluation of Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) index in individuals living with HIV under antiretroviral therapy (ART)

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Introduction Fasting triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, which indirectly evaluates insulin resistance, is an important risk parameter in various diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Tree shrew model of early diabetic retinopathy reveals microvascular dysfunction and identifies phosphoserine aminotransferase 1 as a novel therapeutic target

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
We developed an animal model of early diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the tree shrew by feeding a high‐fat and high‐sugar diet in combination with STZ. Physiological and biochemical index detection, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and transmission electron microscopy were performed to examine DR.

Hemoglobin glycation index and triglyceride-glucose index are related to diabetic nephropathy

open access: yesCirugía y Cirujanos (English Edition)
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a significant complication of diabetes. Despite strict management of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), DN may progress to end-stage renal disease. HbA1c, the best biomarker for glycemic management, may differ in similar FPG. Hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) = HbA1c as determined minus HbA1c as predicted.

Association of triglyceride‑glucose index in branch retinal vein occlusion

open access: yesGraefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology
Abstract Background To investigate the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and newly diagnosed branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) in patients. Methods The study included 57 individuals with BRVO and a control group comprising 50 healthy volunteers ...

Metabolic and biochemical profiling reveals phenotypic heterogeneity in Zucker diabetic fatty rats

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Genetically uniform Zucker Diabetic Fatty (ZDF) rats spontaneously develop four distinct metabolic phenotypes despite identical housing and diet conditions. Each phenotype exhibits unique biomarker signatures encompassing glucose homeostasis, insulin secretion, polyol pathway activation, oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and neurotrophic ...

Sex as a biological variable in nonclinical studies: Bridging scientific rigor, animal welfare, and regulatory expectations

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Sex as a biological variable (SABV) is a critical determinant of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and toxicity in nonclinical studies. This review highlights how inappropriate neglect of sex differences compromises animal welfare, scientific reproducibility, and regulatory compliance.
