Functional plasticity in the type IV secretion system of Helicobacter pylori. [PDF]
Helicobacter pylori causes clinical disease primarily in those individuals infected with a strain that carries the cytotoxin associated gene pathogenicity island (cagPAI).

Regulation of Type 1 Pili Expression as Exemplified by Escherichia Coli Strain M17
Studies of E. coli strain M17 colibacterin and its derivatives showed that fimH gene regulates morphological characteristics of type 1 fimbria and cell piliation on the whole. Gene fimH has a negative effect and decreased the percentage of piliated cells in the population and piliation of individual cells, which does not agree with its role of a ...

Mucosal fluid glycoprotein DMBT1 suppresses twitching motility and virulence of the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. [PDF]
It is generally thought that mucosal fluids protect underlying epithelial surfaces against opportunistic infection via their antimicrobial activity.

Immunoglobulin A and secretory immunoglobulin A antibodies to purified type 1 Klebsiella pneumoniae pili in human colostrum [PDF]
Immunoglobulin A antibodies with binding specificity for purified Klebsiella pneumoniae type 1 pili were detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 20 of 21 human samples (95%). The concentrations of secretory immunoglobulin A antibody in colostrum directed against the pili were calculated by comparison of experimental enzyme-linked ...

The ‘porin-cytochrome’ model for microbe-to-mineral electron transfer [PDF]
Many species of bacteria can couple anaerobic growth to the respiratory reduction of insoluble minerals containing Fe(III) or Mn(III/IV). It has been suggested that in Shewanella species electrons cross the outer membrane to extracellular substrates via ‘

Nucleotide sequence of pilA, the gene encoding the structural component of type 1 pili in Escherichia coli [PDF]
The pilA gene of Escherichia coli J96 encoding pilin, the structural component of type 1 pili, was sequenced and found to specify a polypeptide 159 amino acids long preceded by a 23-amino-acid signal peptide. As determined from the DNA sequence, the mature peptide lacked tryptophane and methionine, two amino acids previously shown to be lacking in type

Recurrent Hypothermia and Autonomic Dysfunction Secondary to Shapiro Syndrome
ABSTRACT A 44‐year‐old man presented with recurrent hypothermia, diaphoresis and hypertension. Extensive investigation for infectious, inflammatory, metabolic and endocrine aetiologies was negative. MR scan of the brain demonstrated no lesions but revealed callosal dysgenesis, consistent with Shapiro syndrome.

It was recently shown that haloarchaeal strains of different genera are able to adhere to surfaces and form surface-attached biofilms. However the surface structures mediating the adhesion were still unknown.

Production of pili, hemolysin and siderophores in the urinary isolates of Escherichia coli [PDF]
Introduction. Escherichia coli (E. coli) are the most frequent cause of the urinary tract infections. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) produce virulence factors which enable them to survive in the urinary tract and cause an infection. Objective.
