Investigations of the taxonomy and morphological variation of Ulva (Chlorophyta): Ulva californica Wille

Abstract The taxonomic relationships of Ulva californica, U. angusta and U. scagelii were evaluated through morphological studies of field and herbarium specimens, and through culture studies. These species show ecological, morphological and cytological similarities but differ in size, habit and distributions.

Diploid Gametes in Ulva

IN the course of experiments on Ulva mutabilis1 some gametophytes are occasionally found forming swarmer which copulate neither with +-gametes nor with −-gametes. These swarmers are diploid, as revealed by cytological and genetical examination. They are biflagellate and of normal size, and otherwise they fully resemble normal gametes.

The Ionic Relations of Ulva lactuca

Summary The ionic relations of the marine green alga, Ulva lactuca (L.) Grev. have been studied in seawater ([K+]o, 10.1 mol m-3; [Na+]o, 468 mol m-3; [CI-]o, 547 mol m-3). The membrane potential (Δψi,o) was -39 ∓ 1.1mV in the light and -25∓1.9mV in the dark (∓95% confidence limits), based on micro-electrode measurements.
