The Therapeutic Potential of Urolithin A for Cancer Treatment and Prevention
Current Cancer Drug Targets, 2022Background: Urolithin A is the metabolite of natural polyphenol ellagic acid and ellagitannins generated by gut microbiota. Urolithin A is better absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract than its parent substances. Thus, the variable effects of ellagitannin-reach food (like pomegranate fruit, walnuts, tea, and others) on people's health might be linked ...

Impact of the Natural Compound Urolithin A on Health, Disease, and Aging [PDF]
Urolithin A (UA) is a natural compound produced by gut bacteria from ingested ellagitannins (ETs) and ellagic acid (EA), complex polyphenols abundant in foods such as pomegranate, berries, and nuts. UA was discovered 40 years ago, but only recently has its impact on aging and disease been explored.

The Synthesis of Urolithins and their Derivatives and the Modes of Antitumor Action
Mini-Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry, 2023Abstract: Urolithins are microbial metabolites derived from berries and pomegranate fruits, which display anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-aging activities. There are eight natural urolithins (urolithin A-E, M5, M6 and M7), which have been isolated by now.

Gastrointestinal stability of urolithins: an in vitro approach
European Journal of Nutrition, 2015Urolithins are bioactive ellagitannin-derived metabolites showing a wide phenotypic variation in their production by the gut microbiota. This work represents a first in vitro step toward the development of new strategies focused on the oral supplementation of urolithins with the aim of overcoming their selective production and making their putative ...

Effect of Urolithin A on Bone Repair in Mice with Bone Defects
Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, 2021Bone defect difficult to manage clinically and it is a big challenge to repair it. Secondary metabolites source from herb has shown potential for the treatment of bone defect.Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated from mice and incubated with urolithin A (UA) (10, 25, and 50 µg/mL).

Research progress of ellagitannin intestinal metabolite urolithins
China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica, 2016Ellagitannins is a kind of phenolic compounds with many biological activities. Recent studies have found that the effective ingredients of these compounds have close relationship with their colon-derived bacteria metabolites, that is urolithins.

Urolithin A attenuates arsenic-induced gut barrier dysfunction
Archives of Toxicology, 2022Environmental chemicals such as inorganic arsenic (iAs) significantly contribute to redox toxicity in the human body by enhancing oxidative stress. Imbalanced oxidative stress rapidly interferes with gut homeostasis and affects variety of cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis, and maintenance of intestinal barrier integrity.

Synthesis of urolithin derivatives and their anti-inflammatory activity
Biochemical and Biophysical Research CommunicationsTwo series of urolithin derivatives, totally 38 compounds, were synthesized. Their anti-inflammatory activity was investigated by detecting the inhibitory effects on the expression of TNF-α in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs), showing that 24 of 38 ones reduced the expression of TNF-α.
