Abstract Fruit from 42 blueberry ( Vaccinium species) cultivars, including 36 rabbiteye cultivars ( Vaccinium ashei Reade), 3 V. ashei hybrid derivatives and 3 northern highbush ( V. corymbosum L.) standards, were evaluated for antioxidant activities (AA), levels of antioxidant enzymes [catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (AsA-POD), glutathione

Blueberry wine pomace is rich in pectin, which has been extensively used as a functional dietary fiber and a rheological modifier in the food industry. This paper reports a method to extract the pectin-rich fraction (PF) with a mediate degree of esterification of 51.66% from blueberry wine pomace and provides insight into its relationship between the ...

Abstract Amphiploids were produced from pentaploid hybrids between Vaccinium corymbosum (4x) and Vaccinium ashei (6x) by colchicine treatment. Seeds of each parental species and those obtained by the interspecific crossing were treated with colchicine at 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/l for 7 days, and the ploidy level of the seedlings was determined ...

Sucrose metabolism and fruit growth in parthenocarpic vs seeded blueberry (Vaccinium ashei) fruits
Physiologia Plantarum, 1997Although fruit set and development are induced by applications of gibberellins, final fruit weight of gibberellin‐induced parthenocarpic fruit is often less than that of pollinated fruit. We examined changes in the activities of sucrose‐metabolizing enzymes and sugar accumulation in developing fruits of cultivated blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade) and ...

The total phenolic content (TFC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity, and polyphenol composition of extracts of rabbiteye blueberry fruit polyphenols (BBFPs), rabbiteye blueberry pomace polyphenols (BBPPs), and rabbiteye blueberry leaves polyphenols (BBLPs) were investigated.

Blueberry fruit can be easily stored at low temperature and high R.H., for nearly one month, without significant loss of quality. There are differences in storability between cultivars. A screening research was carried out in 2004 to evaluate the storability of 10 different cultivars, some of them produced in different localities, in the plains or on ...

To select rabbiteye blueberry leaves from an appropriate harvest season to develop functional foods, this paper studied the bioactive secondary metabolites and the antioxidant capacity of rabbiteye blueberry leaves from May, September, and November. The results showed the leaves from May had the highest content of total flavonoids (114.21 mg/g) and the

Effect ofVaccinium ashei readeLeaf Extracts on Lipid Metabolism in Obese OLETF Rats
Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 2011The effects of a hot water extract and fractional extracts from rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei reade) leaves (BBL) on lipid metabolism were studied in obese Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Feeding the hot water extract and fractional extracts from BBL alleviated hepatic triglyceride accumulation in the rats.
