Beyond Co‐Occurrence: Multi‐Scale Evidence for Segregation‐Dominated Plant Networks in the French Alps

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 5, May 2026.
Using high‐resolution spatial data and a multi‐scale statistical framework, we disentangle plant co‐occurrence from true spatial associations across alpine communities in the French Alps. We discovered that local species associations are dependent on soil acidity and nitrogen rather than temperature. By building a global network from these associations,

Ungulate responses to the addition of silicate rock powder in acidified oak (Quercus robur) forests at the Veluwe, the Netherlands

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 4, May 2026.
Abstract Introduction Addition of silicate rock powder (SRP) is an increasingly used measure to restore vegetation and fauna on acidified mineral‐poor soils in protected areas. In theory, however, the positive effects of SRP addition on vegetation may be offset by grazing and browsing ungulates attracted to higher‐quality forage.

Acclimation of subarctic vegetation to warming and increased cloudiness

open access: yesPlant-Environment Interactions
Subarctic ecosystems are exposed to elevated temperatures and increased cloudiness in a changing climate with potentially important effects on vegetation structure, composition, and ecosystem functioning.

Growth and reproduction of the alpine grasshopper Miramella alpina feeding on CO2-enriched dwarf shrubs at treeline [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The consequences for plant-insect interactions of atmospheric changes in alpine ecosystems are not well understood. Here, we tested the effects of elevated CO2 on leaf quality in two dwarf shrub species (Vaccinium myrtillus and V.

Using high‐resolution imagery to map Scots pine regeneration in the Scottish uplands

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April/June 2026.
This study utilizes high‐resolution imagery to map over 90,000 naturally regenerating Scots pines across a 3360‐ha area in the Scottish Uplands. Our approach demonstrates that remote sensing can accurately quantify landscape‐scale forest expansion, identifying nearly 85% of saplings over 2 m tall.

Fertilizing and liming in a heather area of Norway

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2006
In a 6 years' field experiment in a podzolized heather area in Norway the effects of liming and P and Cu fertilization were tested versus changes in vegetation and soil chemistry.
