Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Deciphering the Evolution Pattern of Structural Variations Overlapped With Repetitive Sequence During Cattle Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The authors complement bovine pan‐SV with massive novel structural variations (SVs) identified through long‐read sequencing of 83 globally distributed cattle breeds. Repetitive sequence‐mediated SVs (rep‐SV) exhibit distinct dynamic patterns throughout cattle sub‐speciation and/or domestication processes, including uneven distribution between chr‐X and

Vegan versus meat-based dog food: Guardian-reported health outcomes in 2,536 dogs, after controlling for canine demographic factors

open access: yesHeliyon
To compare health outcomes between dogs fed meat and vegan diets, we surveyed 2,536 dog guardians who provided data and opinions about dogs fed conventional meat (1,370 = 54 %), raw meat (830 = 33 %) or vegan (336 = 13 %) diets for at least one year.

Linking Plant Metabolomics with Fungal Functional Dynamics Reveals a Noncanonical S‐R‐C Adaptive Trajectory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using field‐based holo‐omics, we demonstrate that developmental shifts in sorghum leaf metabolomes drive a noncanonical fungal succession from stress tolerators (S) through ruderals (R) to competitors (C). Antifungal metabolites in young leaves select for S strategists with expanded genomes, transient maltose pulses during flowering favor fast‐growing ...

Why meat-eaters reject calls for a meat-free diet: Social norm and messenger effects in two meat-eating cultures

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
Eating meat is central to most cultures but produces substantial personal carbon emissions, contributing to the climate crisis. We compare the effectiveness of vegan versus meat-eating messengers on support for adopting an environmentally-friendly vegan ...
