Killing them softly:managing pathogen polymorphism and virulence in spatially variable environments [PDF]
Understanding why pathogen populations are genetically variable is vital because genetic variation fuels evolution, which often hampers disease control efforts.

Streptococcus pneumoniae colonizes the mucin-rich environment of the nasopharynx. As colonization may be the first stage of infection, investigation was carried out as to whether the pneumococcus could utilize mucin as a source of nutrient and whether ...

Evolutionary trade-offs underlie the multi-faceted virulence of Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]
Date of Acceptance: 20/07/2015Bacterial virulence is a multifaceted trait where the interactions between pathogen and host factors affect the severity and outcome of the infection. Toxin secretion is central to the biology of many bacterial pathogens and

A highly conserved tRNA modification contributes to C. albicans filamentation and virulence
tRNA modifications play important roles in maintaining translation accuracy in all domains of life. Disruptions in the tRNA modification machinery, especially of the anticodon stem loop, can be lethal for many bacteria and lead to a broad range of ...

Disease resistance in plants depends on a molecular dialogue with microbes that involves many known chemical effectors, but the time course of the interaction and the influence of the environment are largely unknown.

Passaging of a Newcastle disease virus pigeon variant in chickens results in selection of viruses with mutations in the polymerase complex enhancing virus replication and virulence [PDF]
Some Newcastle disease virus (NDV) variants isolated from pigeons (pigeon paramyxovirus type 1; PPMV-1) do not show their full virulence potential for domestic chickens but may become virulent upon spread in these animals.

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.
