The discovery of the chemical nature of tobacco mosaic virus.

Rivista di biologia, 2000
The path to arrive at the elucidation of the chemical nature of plant viruses was greatly facilitated by the availability of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as biological tool. The first hypothesis on the chemical nature of TMV was advanced in 1899 by the American Albert Wood, who suggested an enzyme nature.

Introduction: Nipah Virus—Discovery and Origin

2012
Until the Nipah outbreak in Malaysia in 1999, knowledge of human infections with the henipaviruses was limited to the small number of cases associated with the emergence of Hendra virus in Australia in 1994. The Nipah outbreak in Malaysia alerted the global public health community to the severe pathogenic potential and widespread distribution of these ...

The Virus of Poliomyelitis

JAMA, 1983
Gustavson 1 defined science as that body of knowledge obtained by techniques that enable us to place limiting values on our preconceptions. A review of what we now know about poliomyelitis reveals a list of preconceptions that have been modified with the help of techniques developed to examine them.

The Discovery of the Hepatitis C Virus

2019
After a 6-year intensive search for the causative agent of parenteral non-A, non-B hepatitis using a large variety of pre-PCR molecular biological, immunological, and virological methods, HCV was discovered using a cDNA immunoscreening method in which infectious chimpanzee plasma was used as the source of cloning material and NANBH patient sera as a ...

[Discovery of the hepatitis C virus].

Presse medicale (Paris, France : 1983), 1991
After 15 years of unsuccessful attempts, the most frequent of non-A non-B (NANB) hepatitis viruses has recently been identified and designated HCV. It is by an original and direct molecular biology approach, leading to the cloning of nucleic acids presumed to be present in an infectious plasma, that this virus could be partially characterized.

Molecular methods for virus discovery.

Developments in biologicals, 2006
The potential use of novel cell substrates from diverse animal species raises concerns about the transmission of hitherto unknown viral agents. Viruses that do not cause a cytopathic effect in cell culture may escape detection by conventional methods and molecular methods may therefore prove useful for screening for hitherto unknown viruses.

[The discovery of hepatitis G virus].

Casopis lekaru ceskych, 1996
Some 20% of cases of posttransfusion and sporadic hepatitis non-A, non-B are anti-HCV negative. In 1995 it proved possible in collaboration of Genelabs with Boehringer Co. Mannheim to identify a new RNA virus which causes acute and chronic hepatitis in humans and tamarins. The genome of the virus contains some 2900 amino acids, and as to its structure,
