Toward eradication of B-vitamin deficiencies : considerations for crop biofortification [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
'Hidden hunger' involves insufficient intake of micronutrients and is estimated to affect over two billion people on a global scale. Malnutrition of vitamins and minerals is known to cause an alarming number of casualties, even in the developed world ...

What if it is just vitamin C deficiency? The role of vitamin C deficiency in musculoskeletal pain. Mechanisms, clinical implications, and therapeutic approaches. [PDF]

open access: yesBatna Journal of Medical Sciences
Subclinical vitamin C deficiency, while less apparent than scurvy, is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to idiopathic musculoskeletal pain, yet it remains underdiagnosed in clinical settings.

Scurvy: A treatable forgotten fatal differential diagnosis and potential etiology of leukemia and aplastic anemia in pediatric population

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, 2023
Scurvy is a rare nutritional deficiency disease which is less likely to be suspected and it mostly lead to delayed diagnosis. It can present with features which can mislead clinicians to misdiagnose the condition as leukemia or aplastic anemia.

The association of combined vitamin C and D deficiency with bone mineral density and vertebral fracture

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research
Purpose Both vitamin C and D deficiencies are extremely common in clinical practice, especially in elderly population. Unfortunately, the role of vitamin C deficiency in osteoporosis related consequences is often neglected.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Regulation of Vitamin C Homeostasis during Deficiency [PDF]

open access: yesNutrients, 2013
Large cross-sectional population studies confirm that vitamin C deficiency is common in humans, affecting 5%–10% of adults in the industrialized world. Moreover, significant associations between poor vitamin C status and increased morbidity and mortality have consistently been observed.

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Vitamin D supplementation in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency : the effect on disease activity, fatigue and interferon signature gene expression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) [1]. Evidence from multiple studies has shown that vitamin D deficiency in SLE is associated with a higher disease activity [2].
