Transcriptome and metabolome profiling identify factors potentially involved in pro-vitamin A accumulation in cassava landraces

open access: yesPlant Physiology and Biochemistry, 2023
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a predominant food security crop in several developing countries. Its storage roots, rich in carbohydrate, are deficient in essential micronutrients, including provitamin A carotenoids. Increasing carotenoid content in cassava storage roots is important to reduce the incidence of vitamin A deficiency, a public ...

Dietary Folic Acid Alters Metabolism of Multiple Vitamins in a CerS6- and Sex-Dependent Manner

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2021
Folic acid, an oxidized synthetic pro-vitamin B9, is widely used in vitamin supplement formulations and food fortification to maintain optimal folate status in humans. Studies on folic acid (FA) efficiency in improving folate status and correcting folate

α-Tocopherol pro-vitamins: synthesis, hydrolysis and accumulation in rabbit ear skin

open access: yesJournal of Controlled Release, 2004
We synthesized esters of alpha-tocopherol (VE) with the aim to develop new pro-vitamins, easily reconverted by enzymes in the skin and able to release another active moiety such as an amino acid, in order to obtain a synergic effect. In particular, the attention was dedicated to the amino acids glycine and alanine and to pyroglutamic acid.

THE ANTIMALARIA DRUG ARTEMISININ DISPLAYS STRONG CYTOTOXIC EFFECT ON LEUKAEMIA LYMPHOCYTES IN COMBINATION WITH VITAMIN C AND PRO-VITAMIN K3

open access: yesTHE ANTIMALARIA DRUG ARTEMISININ DISPLAYS STRONG CYTOTOXIC EFFECT ON LEUKAEMIA LYMPHOCYTES IN COMBINATION WITH VITAMIN C AND PRO-VITAMIN K3, 2021
This study investigated the anticancer effect of the anti-parasitic drug artemisinin in combination with two redox modulators: vitamin C and pro-vitamin K3 (C/K3) The experiments were conducted on leukaemia cells Jurkat. Cells were treated with either artemisinin or C/K3 alone and with all three compounds. Cell proliferation and viability were analysed

Association of vitamins, minerals, and lead with Lipoprotein(a) in a cross-sectional cohort of US adults.

open access: yesInternational journal for vitamin and nutrition research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Vitamin- und Ernahrungsforschung. Journal international de vitaminologie et de nutrition, 2021
Lipoprotein(a)(Lp[a]) is a low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C)-like particle with potent pro-atherothrombotic properties. The association of Lp(a) with several circulating factors, including vitamins, remains unresolved.

Home-based versus clinic-based care for patients starting antiretroviral therapy with low CD4⁺ cell counts: findings from a cluster-randomized trial. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
OBJECTIVES: African health services have shortages of clinical staff. We showed previously, in a cluster-randomized trial, that a home-based strategy using trained lay-workers is as effective as a clinic-based strategy. It is not known whether home-based
