Abnormal alpha-synuclein reduces nigral voltage-dependent anion channel 1 in sporadic and experimental Parkinson's disease

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2014
Both the misfolding of α-synuclein and mitochondrial dysfunction are considered two major contributors to Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the relationship between the two in normal and PD states remains unclear.

Bacteria‐Responsive Nanostructured Drug Delivery Systems for Targeted Antimicrobial Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bacteria‐responsive nanocarriers are designed to release antimicrobials only in the presence of infection‐specific cues. This selective activation ensures drug release precisely at the site of infection, avoiding premature or indiscriminate release, and enhancing efficacy.

Membrane proteins in the outer mebrane of plastids and mitochondria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Channels of the plastid and mitochondrial outer membranes facilitate the turnover of molecules and ions via these membranes. Although channels have been studied many questions pertaining to the whole diversity of plastid and mitochondrial channels in ...

Voltage-dependent inactivation of the plasmodial surface anion channel via a cleavable cytoplasmic component

open access: yes, 2012
Erythrocytes infected with malaria parasites have increased permeability to ions and various nutrient solutes, mediated by a parasite ion channel known as the plasmodial surface anion channel (PSAC).

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

The Voltage-Gating Process of the Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel Is Sensitive to Ion Flow

open access: yes, 1998
The voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) is a voltage-gated channel from the mitochondrial outer membrane. It has two gating processes: one at positive potentials and the other at negative potentials.

2D Co‐Mo‐Hydroxide‐Based Multifunctional Material for the Development of H2‐Based Clean Energy Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
2D α‐Co(OH)2 interleaved with Mo species displays an appealing dual functionality for the production and use of green hydrogen.Mo incorporation greatly benefits the electrochemical behaviour in Oxygen Evolution Reaction for H2 production, while the magnetocaloric response at liquid H2 temperature paves the way for alternative cryogenic refrigerants ...

Monitoring Cl- movement in single cells exposed to hypotonic solution

open access: yes, 2005
Self-referencing ion--selective electrodes (ISEs), made with Chloride Ionophore I-Cocktail A (Fluka), were positioned 1-3 microm from human embryonic kidney cells (tsA201a) and used to record chloride flux during a sustained hyposmotic challenge. The ISE

POM‐Based Water Splitting Catalyst Under Acid Conditions Driven by Its Assembly on Carbon Nanotubes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A newly‐engineered POM‐based electrocatalyst incorporating non‐innocent counter cations exhibits fast kinetics for either the OER or HER under strongly acidic conditions (1 m H2SO4), depending on whether it is assembled on carbon nanotubes (1@CNT) or physically mixed with them (1/CNT). In water‐splitting tests using a two‐electrode setup, these systems

A Cu‐Based Near‐IR Active MOF with an Ion‐Pair Guest Exhibiting Versatile and Selective Gas‐Solid Reactivity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The new Cu‐containing MOF (Me2NH2)(CuICl2)@[Cu4(INA)4Cl2O]·1.5dmf (3) contains a cation and an anion as guests and shows UV‐near‐mid‐IR absorption and near‐IR emission. MOF 3 shows gas‐solid reactivity in the presence of NH3 and HCOOH to yield two new 3D MOF.
