Intensity Distribution of Modes in Surface Corrugated Waveguides

open access: yes, 1998
Exact calculations of transmission and reflection coefficients in surface randomly corrugated optical waveguides are presented. As the length of the corrugated part of the waveguide increases, there is a strong preference to forward coupling through the ...

Clustering in a precipitate free GeMn magnetic semiconductor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We present the first study relating structural parameters of precipitate free Ge0.95Mn0.05 films to magnetisation data. Nanometer sized clusters - areas with increased Mn content on substitutional lattice sites compared to the host matrix - are detected ...

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Maximizing the information gain of a single ion microscope using bayes experimental design

open access: yes, 2016
We show nanoscopic transmission microscopy, using a deterministic single particle source and compare the resulting images in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, with those of conventional Poissonian sources. Our source is realized by deterministic extraction

Exploiting metabolic adaptations to overcome dabrafenib treatment resistance in melanoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that dabrafenib‐resistant melanoma cells undergo mitochondrial remodeling, leading to elevated respiration and ROS production balanced by stronger antioxidant defenses. This altered redox state promotes survival despite mitochondrial damage but renders resistant cells highly vulnerable to ROS‐inducing compounds such as PEITC, highlighting redox

Influence of severe plastic deformation on the precipitation hardening of a FeSiTi steel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The combined strengthening effects of grain refinement and high precipitated volume fraction (~6at.%) on the mechanical properties of FeSiTi alloy subjected to SPD processing prior to aging treatment were investigated by atom probe tomography and ...

Astrocytes amplify neuronal dendritic volume transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
AbstractIn addition to their support role in neurotransmitter and ion buffering, astrocytes directly regulate neurotransmission at synapses via local bidirectional signaling with neurons. Here, we reveal a new form of neuronal-astrocytic signaling that transmits retrograde dendritic signals to upstream neurons to activate recurrent synaptic circuits ...

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Nonsynaptic neurotransmission

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Psychopharmacology, 2021
Information in the brain is transmits by both synaptic and nonsynaptic neurotransmission (NSN). NSN includes the diffusion through the extracellular fluid of neurotransmitters released from nonsynaptic varicosities and high-affinity transmitter ...
