Effect of laser surface hardening on a low carbon steel substrate wear and hardness [PDF]
Laser surface hardening (LSH) is an effective process to produce hard and wear resistant steel surfaces. This work produced hardened surfaces using a fiber laser in a bare (B. uncoated) and carbon-coated (C) conditions. The obtained hardness and microstructure were compatible to martensite (B) and cementite (C) major constituents.

WoLFRaM: Enhancing Wear-Leveling and Fault Tolerance in Resistive Memories using Programmable Address Decoders [PDF]
Resistive memories have limited lifetime caused by limited write endurance and highly non-uniform write access patterns. Two main techniques to mitigate endurance-related memory failures are 1) wear-leveling, to evenly distribute the writes across the entire memory, and 2) fault tolerance, to correct memory cell failures.

The effect of retained austenite on the wear mechanism of bainitic ductile iron under impact load
The effect of retained austenite on the impact wear resistance of bainitic ductile iron is studied. Two kinds of bainitic ductile iron with different morphologies of retained austenite were fabricated via continuous cooling process.

A novel wear-resistant magnetic thin film material based on a $Ti_{1-x}Fe_xC_{1-y}$ nanocomposite alloy [PDF]
In this study we report on the film growth and characterization of thin (approximately 50 nm thick) Ti-Fe-C films deposited on amorphous quartz. The experimental studies have been complemented by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Upon annealing of as-prepared films, the composition of the metastable Ti-Fe-C film changes. An

Degradation of alumina and zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) hip prostheses tested under microseparation conditions in a shock device [PDF]
This paper considers the degradation of alumina and zirconia toughened alumina vs. alumina for hip implants. The materials are as assumed to be load bearing surfaces subjected to shocks in wet conditions. The load is a peak of force; 9 kN was applied over 15 ms at 2 Hz for 800,000 cycles.

Low-friction, wear-resistant, and electrically homogeneous multilayer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition on molybdenum [PDF]
Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) is a promising method for producing large-scale graphene (Gr). Nevertheless, microscopic inhomogeneity of Gr grown on traditional metal substrates such as copper or nickel results in a spatial variation of Gr properties due to long wrinkles formed when the metal substrate shrinks during the cooling part of the ...

Concurrent transitions in wear rate and surface microstructure in nanocrystalline Ni-W [PDF]
Nanocrystalline metals are promising materials for wear-resistant applications due to their superior strength and hardness, but prior work has shown that cyclic loading can lead to coarsening. In this study, scratch wear tests were carried out on nanocrystalline Ni-19 at.% W films with an as-deposited grain size of 3 nm, with systematic ...
