Brain metastases: fractionated whole-brain radiotherapy

2018
Brain metastases are the most common malignant adult intracranial tumors, occurring in approximately 10-30% of cancer patients, and generally lead to a poor prognosis. The incidence has been steadily rising, likely due to longer survival from newer systemic therapies and increased utilization of magnetic resonance imaging.

Automatic planning on hippocampal avoidance whole-brain radiotherapy

Medical Dosimetry, 2017
Mounting evidence suggests that radiation-induced damage to the hippocampus plays a role in neurocognitive decline for patients receiving whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Hippocampal avoidance whole-brain radiotherapy (HA-WBRT) has been proposed to reduce the putative neurocognitive deficits by limiting the dose to the hippocampus.

Parotid gland as a risk organ in whole brain radiotherapy

Radiotherapy and Oncology, 2011
Since the introduction of CT-based simulation for use in whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT), we have observed that a large volume of the parotid glands is included in the radiation fields. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dose-volume statistics of the parotid glands in patients undergoing WBRT.Thirty-two patients received WBRT using CT-based ...

Hippocampal-Sparing Whole-Brain Radiotherapy for Lung Cancer

Clinical Lung Cancer, 2017
Brain metastases occur in 20% to 40% of lung cancer patients. Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has long been considered the treatment of choice for many patients with lung cancer, because of its wide availability, ease of delivery, and effectiveness in prolonging survival.

Comparative Efficacy of Whole-Brain Radiotherapy Combined with Supplemental Precision Radiotherapy and Whole-Brain Radiotherapy Alone for Brain Metastases

Oncology Treatment Discovery
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of whole-brain radiotherapy combined with supplemental precision radiotherapy compared to whole-brain radiotherapy alone for brain metastasis. Methods: Twenty-six cases of patients with brain metastasis were observed from January 2020 to June 2023.

Whole brain radiotherapy for the treatment of multiple brain metastases

2006
Brain radiotherapy is used to treat cancer patients who have brain metastases resulting from various primary malignancies. To assess the effectiveness and adverse effects of whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) in adult patients with multiple metastases to the brain.CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library), MEDLINE, EMBASE, CANCERLIT, and CINAHL were searched ...

Influence of Whole-Brain Radiotherapy on Remission of Brain Metastases

Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2006
TO THE EDITOR: Schwab et al reported an intriguing therapeutic benefit in a female nonsmoker with multiple brain metastases from lung adenocarcinoma treated with gefitinib 250 mg daily 3 years after thoracic surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Gefitinib treatment was initiated 6 weeks after whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with 36 Gy because of a lack of

Radiosurgery alone or in combination with whole-brain radiotherapy for brain metastases.

Journal of Clinical Oncology, 1998
PURPOSE Evaluation of the treatment outcome after radiosurgery (RS) alone or in combination with whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with special attention to prescribed dose and its influence on local control and survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between September 1984 and January 1997, 236 patients with 311 brain metastases treated with radiosurgery met the

Whole brain radiotherapy in the treatment of metastatic brain tumors

Seminars in Surgical Oncology, 1998
Previous prospective and retrospective trials have failed to demonstrate the best treatment approach for patients with brain metastases. As a result, fractionated whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been the mainstay of treatment for several decades. However, with improved surgical techniques and the advent of radiosurgical procedures to treat single ...

Marked response of gliomatosis cerebri to temozolomide and whole brain radiotherapy

Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, 2012
Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) represents an unfortunate, rare variant of glioma with a very poor prognosis. Given this lesion's rarity, little information exists on appropriate treatment options. The diffuse, infiltrative nature of GC precludes any surgical resection and limits therapy. Because of the improved survival seen with the use of temozolomide (TMZ)
