Disagreement About Fiscal Policy
ABSTRACT Politicians disagree about fiscal policy. This disagreement should have economic effects beyond the effects of government spending and taxation. We use the full set of speeches in the German Bundestag since 1960 and apply state‐of‐the art natural language processing techniques to construct two series of fiscal disagreement starting in 1970 ...

Middlebrow Aesthetics: An Explanation and Defense
ABSTRACT We offer a philosophical account of the middlebrow as a theoretical category to do explanatory and critical work in aesthetics. On our account, the middlebrow ought to be understood as aspirational popular art. That is, it is art which aspires both to be popular (in a distinctive sense), and at the same time to be something more than popular ...

Obesity and the Politics of Taddeo di Bartolo's Inferno
ABSTRACT This paper examines Taddeo di Bartolo's depiction of Hell in the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, the mother church of San Gimignano. In a striking departure from similar scenes of the period, the fresco, painted in the early fifteenth century, emphasizes the obesity of the sinners—suggesting a deliberate visual critique.

Abstract Central arterial stiffening, particularly of the proximal aorta, is increasingly recognised as a pivotal contributor to cardiovascular disease, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment. Loss of Windkessel function amplifies pulsatile pressure, reduces diastolic perfusion and accelerates microvascular damage in the brain.

The cardiac pacemakers: A paradigm of robustness in evolutionary biology
Abstract figure legend Functional networks in living systems are formed by many thousands of gene products. In association with those networks, several genes (four in this diagram) may be sufficient, each on its own, to ensure that the function occurs. Any one of these may be removed or blocked while leaving the others to continue functioning.

Validation of ShakeMaps Created From Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Velocities
Ground velocity observations generated through a time difference of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) phase observables and orbits have been shown to be comparable to seismic recordings without clipping during intense ground motions. Computing GNSS velocities is also computationally scalable and increases the density of ground motion ...
