Stevia preferences in Wistar rats

open access: yesPsicothema, 2016
The Stevia rebaudiana plant is likely to become a major source of high-potency sweetener for the growing natural-food market. S. rebaudiana is the source of a number of sweet diterpenoid glycosides, but the major sweet constituents are rebaudioside A and stevioside.

Multipathway modulation of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress by hesperidin in a rat single prolonged stress model of post‐traumatic stress disorder

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Single prolonged stress (SPS) induces post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)‐like neuropathology characterized by oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, astrocytic reactivity, neuronal damage, and reduced neurotrophic support in the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex. Hesperidin counteracts these effects by attenuating lipid peroxidation and pro‐

Strategies for inducing diabetes in laboratory animals: Advances from chemical, surgical, immunologic, dietary, and genetic approaches

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the principal experimental approaches used to induce diabetes in animal models. Strategies include chemical agents (streptozotocin, alloxan, dithizone, gold thioglucose), dietary interventions (high‐fat and high‐sugar diets), surgical methods (total or partial pancreatectomy), genetic models (db/db, ob/ob, Goto‐Kakizaki [GK ...

Sappanwood extract modulates hepatic structure–function in hepatomegaly and hepcidin related iron regulatory pathways in a phenylhydrazine induced hemolytic anemia rat model relevant to thalassemia

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Phenylhydrazine (PHZ) induces hemolytic anemia characterized by increased erythrocyte destruction and ineffective erythropoiesis, leading to hepcidin suppression through disruption of the BMP/SMAD signaling pathway. Reduced hepcidin levels enhance intestinal iron absorption and hepatic iron accumulation, leading to hepatic iron overload.

A modified D‐galactose‐induced aging rat model with low‐dose intraperitoneal ozone: Redox, functional, and skin outcomes

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Male Wistar rats were subjected to d‐galactose‐induced aging, with or without intermittent low‐dose intraperitoneal ozone administration, and evaluated over 8 weeks for redox status and physical performance, including physical health score, morbidity proportion, body weight, muscle strength, hair regrowth, and skin outcome.

Ac‐SDKP modulates apoptosis via HSP27 and the FAS/FASL and mitochondrial axes

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Schematic diagram of Ac‐SDKP regulating the FAS/FASL and mitochondrial apoptosis pathways via HSP27. Ac‐SDKP inhibits HSP27 expression, activates the FAS/FASL pathway and Caspase‐3 signaling, increases Caspase‐8 and Caspase‐3 expression, and induces cell apoptosis.

Impact of Nanochitin on Serum Concentration of Iron and Calcium in Wistar Rats

open access: yesMedical Laboratory Journal, 2022
Background and objectives: Considering the increasing use of nanochitin for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions, examining the biological effects of this substance on the level of essential metals for humans and animals is crucial ...

Can Viruses be Modified to Achieve Sustained Gene Transfer?

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2011
It is very easy to replace a faulty gene in an immunocompromised mouse. First, one takes a well-characterized virus, such as an adenovirus or an adeno-associated virus, and incorporates the correct version of the faulty gene together with some regulatory

Pre-clinical modeling of cutaneous melanoma

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Despite the new targeted and immunotherapies for metastatic melanoma, several patients show therapeutic plateau. Here, the authors review the current pre-clinical models of cutaneous melanoma and discuss their strengths and limitations that may help with

Fascicle measurement methods do result in lengths that are significantly different

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
A recent comparison of the most prevalent methods for measuring fascicles, in situ measurement versus chemical digestion, concluded that the measurements are indistinguishable based on data from different conspecific individuals. However, our study of contralateral muscles of the same individuals shows that the methods clearly result in statistically ...
