We prove theoretically that when a soft solid is subjected to an extreme deformation, wrinkles can form on its surface at an angle that is oblique to a principal direction of stretch. These oblique wrinkles occur for a strain that is smaller than the one required to obtain wrinkles normal to the direction of greatest compression.

The B form of poly d(GC):poly d(GC) in orthorhombic microcrystallites in oriented fibers has a secondary structure in which a dinucleotide is the repeated motif rather than a mononucleotide as in standard, smooth B DNA. One set of nucleotides (probably GpC) has the same conformations as the smooth form but the alternate (CpG) nucleotides have a ...

The Study of the Wrinkles of Hexagonal Boron-Nitride Flake after the Annealing
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) flakes have been widely used due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. Here, thermal-induced wrinkles of thin h-BN flakes deposited on silicon dioxide substrate were investigated through a combination of ...

Coexistence of wrinkles and blisters in supported graphene [PDF]
Blisters induced by gas trapped in the interstitial space between supported graphene and the substrate are commonly observed. These blisters are often quasi-spherical with a circular rim, but polygonal blisters are also common and coexist with wrinkles ...

Wrinkling hierarchy in constrained thin sheets from suspended graphene to curtains [PDF]
We show that thin sheets under boundary confinement spontaneously generate a universal self-similar hierarchy of wrinkles. From simple geometry arguments and energy scalings, we develop a formalism based on wrinklons, the transition zone in the merging ...

Coexistence of stable branched patterns in anisotropic inhomogeneous systems
A new class of pattern forming systems is identified and investigated: anisotropic systems that are spatially inhomogeneous along the direction perpendicular to the preferred one.

Wrinkled Graphene–AgNWs Hybrid Electrodes for Smart Window
Over the past few years, there has been an increasing demand for stretchable electrodes for flexible and soft electronic devices. An electrode in such devices requires special functionalities to be twisted, bent, stretched, and deformed into variable ...

Crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane [PDF]
first-principles numerical simulation model for crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane is introduced. In our model membranes, wrinkles, ridge formation, ridge collapse, as well as the initiation of stiffness divergence, are observed.

Wrinkles, folds and plasticity in granular rafts [PDF]
We investigate the mechanical response of a compressed monolayer of large and dense particles at a liquid-fluid interface: a granular raft. Upon compression, rafts first wrinkle; then, as the confinement increases, the deformation localizes in a unique ...
