Xanthones from Swertia punctata

Phytochemistry, 2002
Isolation of 1-O-primeverosyl-3,8-dihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone and 1-O-gentiobiosyl-3,7-dimethoxy-8-hydroxyxanthone, along with five known xanthones, isobellidifolin, methylbellidifolin, isoswertianin, methylswertianin and norswertianin-1-O-beta-D-glucoside, from the roots of Swertia punctata is reported. In the aerial parts four xanthones, bellidifolin,

Tetraoxygenated naturally occurring xanthones

open access: yesPhytochemistry, 2000
This review, with 350 references, gives information on the chemical study of 234 naturally occurring tetraoxygenated xanthones in 12 families, 53 genus and 182 species of higher plants, and two which are described as fungal and lichen metabolites. The value of these groups of substances in connection with pharmacological activity and therapeutic use of

Xanthones from Hypericum roeperanum

Phytochemistry, 1996
Four new xanthones have been isolated from the roots of Hypericum roeperanum. Their structures have been established by a combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods as 1,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-4',5'-dihydro-4',4',5'-trimethylfurano- (2',3':3,4)-xanthone (5-O-methyl-2-deprenylrheediaxanthone B), 1,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-6',6'-dimethylpyrano-(2',3 ...

Xanthones ofGarcinia cowa

Planta Medica, 1994
Five xanthones have been isolated from Garcinia cowa Roxb. (Guttiferae): cowanin (1), cowanol (2), cowaxanthone (3), 1,3,6-trihydroxy-7-methoxy- 2-5-bis(3-methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone (4), and norcowanin (5). The structures were assigned by spectroscopic studies. Xanthones 2 and 3 showed moderate antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

The binding of xanthone derivatives to transthyretin

Biochemical Pharmacology, 2005
A series of xanthone derivatives, isolated from Calophyllum teysmannii var. inophylloide, have been evaluated for their binding affinity to transthyretin. Transthyretin is a plasma protein involved in the transport of thyroxine (T4) and also implicated in amyloid diseases.

Sulfonated Xanthones from Hypericum sampsonii.

ChemInform, 2004
Xanthones, 1,3-dihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone-4-sulfonate and 1,3-dihydroxy-5-O-beta-D-glycopyranosylxanthone-4-sulfonate, together with nine known compounds were obtained from H. sampsonii. This is the first report of sulfonated xanthonoids. Furthermore, compounds 1 and 2 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against the P388 cancer cell line.

Flavone and xanthone derivatives related to fluoroquinolones

Il Farmaco, 1999
A number of flavone and xanthone derivatives bearing some characteristic features of fluoroquinolones such as the fluorine atom and an ortho piperazine ring are described. The new compounds have been tested for possible cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities.

Xanthones as systematic markers

Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, 1973
Abstract An evolutionary scheme for shikimate-acetate derived xanthones is deduced from their substitution pattern. Increasing distance of a particular xanthone from the primitive precursor is symbolized by increasing numbers. Each xanthone containing plant species is characterized by the average of the numbers attributed to its constituents.
