Refractive index of cubic zirconia stabilized with yttria

Applied Optics, 1982
The optical transmission and indices of refraction for the cubic isomorph of ZrO(2) stabilized with 12.0-mol % Y(2)O(3) were measured at various temperatures and for a range of wavelengths from 0.36 to 5.1 microm. Index data to +/-5 x 10(-5) were fitted to a three-term Sellmeier equation. The value of N(D) = 2.15847.

Surface cleaning and characterization of yttria‐stabilized zirconia

Surface and Interface Analysis, 2002
Abstract Cleaning substrate surfaces and checking the effectiveness of the cleaning method are two very important aspects of reliable surface analysis. The absence of a cleaning process leading to an yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) surface that is free of contaminants and of unchanged structure has inspired us to investigate a new ...

Diffusion of niobium in yttria-stabilized zirconia and in titania-doped yttria-stabilized zirconia polycrystalline materials

Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 2006
Abstract Bulk and grain boundary diffusion of Nb5+ cations in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, 8 mol% Y2O3–92 mol% ZrO2) and in titania-doped yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ti–YSZ, 5 mol% TiO2–8 mol% Y2O3–87 mol% ZrO2) was studied in air in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 °C. Experiments were performed in the B-type kinetic region.

Threshold displacement energy in yttria‐stabilized zirconia

physica status solidi c, 2007
AbstractWe have studied the color center production in yttria‐stabilized zirconia single crystals (i.e. ZrO2: Y with 9.5 mol% Y2O3) with the (100) orientation, by electron irradiations at energies ranging between 1.0 and 2.5 MeV. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements show that three paramagnetic centers are stable at room‐temperature: i ...

Effects of Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia on Plasma‐Sprayed Hydroxyapatite/Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia Composite Coatings

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2002
The low bonding strength between hydroxyapatite (HA) and the metal substrate interface of plasma‐sprayed HA coating has been a point of potential weakness in its application as a biomedical prosthesis. In the present study, yttria‐stabilized (8 wt%) zirconia (YSZ) has been used to enhance the mechanical properties of HA coatings.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies on yttria, zirconia, and yttria-stabilized zirconia

Journal of Applied Physics, 1991
Surfaces of yttria, zirconia, and yttria-stabilized zirconia were studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. An almost threefold increase in the surface yttrium concentration was observed in the yttria-stabilized zirconia samples. The core level binding energies of yttrium, zirconium, and oxygen ions in yttria-stabilized zirconia showed chemical ...

Superplasticity in Zirconia and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Mixed Powders

Materials Science Forum, 1999
Improved elongations were obtained for samples prepared from a novel powder of 2.5 mol % yttria stabilized zirconia when compared to the commercial powders used up to date. The novel powder consists of mixing two phases, zirconia and 6 mol % yttria stabilized zirconia particles to give an average composition of 2.5 mol % yttria.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Nanocrystals with Controlled Yttria Content

Inorganic Chemistry, 2015
In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the hydrothermal synthesis of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanocrystals with controlled yttria content (x = 3-12 mol %; xYSZ) with negligible aggregation from aqueous solution. The nanocrystals were grown via the hydrothermal treatment of basic Zr(IV) and Y(III) carbonate complex aqueous solutions in

Deformation mechanisms in yttria-stabilized zirconia

Journal of Materials Science, 1988
Yielding behaviour and deformation modes are characterized for single-crystal and polycrystalline yttria-stabilized ZrO2 tested in compression from 23 to 800° C. The plastic flow of single-crystal specimens is shown to be orientation and temperature dependent, and is interpreted in terms of dislocation activity, transformation plasticity, and ...

EXAFS of nanophase zirconia stabilized by yttria

Physica B: Condensed Matter, 1995
Abstract The local structure of Zr4+ in Y2O3-stabilized nanophase zirconia (14 nm) was studied using EXAFS under different sintering temperatures and compacting pressures. An unusual induction of the amplitude of FT(k3χ) of the second ZrM (M = Zr, Y) shell is observed after further consolidation, indicating there are some distorted metal atoms that ...
