Assembly of tight junction belts by ZO1 surface condensation and local actin polymerization [PDF]

open access: yesDevelopmental Cell
Tight junctions play an essential role in sealing tissues, by forming belts of adhesion strands around cellular perimeters. Recent work has shown that the condensation of ZO1 scaffold proteins is required for tight junction assembly. However, the mechanisms by which junctional condensates initiate at cell-cell contacts and elongate around cell ...

Intestinal Barrier Biomarker ZO1 and Endotoxin Are Increased in Blood of Patients With COVID-19-associated Pneumonia [PDF]

open access: yesIn Vivo, 2021
The present study was undertaken to investigate (i) whether hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia present intestinal barrier dysfunction with consequent translocation of endotoxin into the systemic circulation and (ii) whether intestinal barrier biomarkers have any prognostic role in terms of progression to severe respiratory failure. In this ...

ZO1 in Corneal Epithelium: Association to the Zonula Occludens and Adherens Junctions

Experimental Eye Research, 1997
The corneal epithelium, like other stratifying epithelium, does not present a well formed junctional complex as compared to that of simple epithelia. However, the resistance barrier of the corneal epithelium is to a great extent generated by zonula occludens (ZO, tight junction), which are formed between the cells of the apical-most strata.
